Premium Motorcycle Sales India: India’s motorcycle market is undergoing a gradual but significant transformation. Market Share Movements Reflect Changing Buyer Preferences

The evolving demand pattern is visible in the changing market shares of key manufacturers in the mid-to-large motorcycle segment.

Royal Enfield has strengthened its position, expanding its share from around 27 percent earlier in the decade to approximately 32 percent during the first nine months of FY2025-26. This growth highlights sustained demand for retro-styled, lifestyle-focused motorcycles in the 350cc-plus category.

TVS Motor has also improved its presence, moving from nearly 15 percent to about 19 percent in the same period. The company’s expansion into performance-oriented and premium offerings appears to be resonating with buyers.

In contrast, Bajaj Auto’s share in this space has declined significantly, falling from around 32 percent to nearly 22 percent. The shift suggests increasing competition and a redistribution of demand toward brands with stronger premium positioning.

Higher Capacity Bikes Gaining Volume Share

The broader industry numbers reinforce the trend. During the first ten months of FY2025-26, motorcycles with engine capacities above 125cc accounted for roughly 26 percent of total industry volumes — the highest level recorded in more than five years.

This marks a steady increase from around 24.4 percent in FY2024-25, indicating that the move toward larger motorcycles is not a short-term spike but a sustained shift.

At the same time, entry-level commuter motorcycles still make up nearly 73 percent of total sales, highlighting that affordability remains the primary driver for a large section of buyers.

However, the 150cc–350cc segment is steadily expanding, growing from about 23 percent of the market last year to nearly one-quarter now. This middleweight category is emerging as the key battleground for manufacturers.

What’s Driving the Upgrade Trend?

Several economic and policy factors are supporting this transition.

Improved affordability: Recent tax adjustments in certain categories have helped reduce effective prices for some models. Combined with aggressive financing schemes and longer loan tenures, upgrading to a higher-capacity motorcycle has become more accessible.

Rising disposable income: A growing urban middle class is willing to spend more on personal mobility, especially when the product offers better performance, comfort, and brand value.

Lifestyle orientation: Motorcycles are increasingly viewed as lifestyle and leisure products rather than purely functional transport tools. Touring, weekend riding culture, and social media exposure to premium products are influencing buyer behaviour.

Product expansion: Manufacturers are introducing more options across the 150cc–400cc range, giving customers multiple upgrade paths without a steep price jump.

Strategic Implications for Manufacturers

The shift toward higher displacement motorcycles is influencing product planning across the industry.

Brands are now prioritising:

  • Mid-capacity platforms with global potential
  • Stronger brand storytelling and community building
  • Feature-rich models with premium design and technology
  • Expansion of dealership and service networks for premium customers

At the same time, companies cannot afford to ignore the commuter segment, which remains the volume backbone. The future strategy for most players will likely involve a dual approach — volume at the entry level and profitability in the premium space.

What This Means for Indian Buyers

For consumers, the expanding premium segment means:

  • More choices in the 150cc–350cc category
  • Better financing options and ownership flexibility
  • Improved build quality, features, and performance at competitive prices

The upgrade path from commuter to lifestyle motorcycle is becoming smoother than ever.

The Road Ahead- Premium Motorcycle Sales India

India’s two-wheeler market is clearly entering a phase of structural change. While entry-level motorcycles will continue to dominate sales numbers, the steady rise of higher-capacity models reflects a more aspirational buyer base and a maturing market.

If current economic conditions and financing accessibility remain favourable, the premium and mid-capacity segments are likely to gain further momentum in the coming years. For manufacturers, the race is no longer just about volume — it is increasingly about brand strength, product differentiation, and long-term customer engagement.
