Tata BaaS India: Tata Motors is preparing to expand its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model to more electric vehicles as part of a broader strategy to increase volumes in the mass-market segment. The move follows the recent introduction of the battery subscription option with the updated Punch EV.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the upfront cost of electric vehicles and making them more accessible to buyers in the sub-Rs 12 lakh price bracket, a segment that accounts for a large share of India’s passenger vehicle sales but currently has low EV penetration.

Lower Entry Price Through Subscription

Under the Tata BaaS India model, customers have the option to purchase the vehicle at a lower initial price and pay a separate usage-based fee for the battery. Buyers can also choose the conventional ownership route by paying the full ex-showroom price upfront.

For instance, the Punch EV facelift is priced at Rs 9.69 lakh, but the BaaS format reduces the starting vehicle cost to Rs 6.49 lakh, with a battery rental charge of Rs 2.6 per kilometre based on usage.

According to the company, this structure helps address key concerns among first-time EV buyers, including high acquisition costs, uncertainty around battery life and resale value, and differences in taxation compared to conventional vehicles.

Focus on High-Volume Segments

India’s entry-level passenger vehicle categories account for more than 30 lakh units annually, yet EV penetration in this space remains limited. Tata Motors believes that improving affordability at this level could significantly increase electric vehicle adoption.

Currently, around 10 percent of buyers in the compact SUV segment opt for electric variants. The company expects this share to grow to 15–20 percent in the near term, with internal projections suggesting EV adoption could approach one-third of segment sales by 2030.

Regional Adoption Trends

The company has observed higher acceptance of cleaner mobility technologies in certain regions. Cities such as Jaipur and states including Kerala have reported 30–40 percent adoption of alternative powertrains, indicating that infrastructure availability and consumer awareness play a key role in EV uptake.

Tata Motors also plans to introduce larger battery options in future products to improve long-distance usability, which remains a consideration for many buyers.

Tata BaaS India Expansion Plans Ahead

The battery subscription format is expected to be extended to additional electric models over time. At the same time, Tata is developing future vehicles that are designed from the outset as dedicated EVs rather than adapted from internal combustion platforms.

By lowering the initial purchase barrier while offering flexible ownership options, the expanded Tata BaaS India strategy is intended to support higher EV volumes in the country’s most price-sensitive segments.
