What’s New on the Bajaj Avenger 220 Street?

The ‘Street’ badge makes a major comeback into the higher displacement cruiser category. Previously, Bajaj limited the Street treatment to the smaller 160cc entry-level segment, but that variant was quietly discontinued to clear paths for this flagship 220cc version.

To give it a distinct identity, Bajaj has added several functional updates:

  • Practical Wheel Setup: The biggest mechanical relief for buyers is the inclusion of multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in tubeless tyres. The tire sizing remains uniform with a 90-section front and 130-section rear profile, ensuring simpler puncture repairs during city rides.
  • Redesigned Front End: The traditional round headlamp now features an aggressive horizontal LED DRL element fitted at the bottom edge. Additionally, the front telescopic forks now get protective rubber fork gaiters.
  • Urban Ergonomics: The low and approachable 737mm seat height continues to provide solid confidence for short riders. However, the handlebar setup is now flatter and dropped lower to create a sharper, more engaging city handling stance.

Engine Performance, Gearbox and Color Options

Mechanically, the Bajaj Avenger 220 Street shares its entire internal powertrain with the Cruise variant. It continues to rely on the time-tested 220cc, single-cylinder, twin-spark, oil-cooled DTS-i engine.

The powertrain generates a maximum power output of 19 hp and a peak torque performance of 17.5 Nm. The engine comes mated to a smooth-shifting 5-speed gearbox setup.

To complement the dark, stealth-cruiser theme, the complete engine casing, lower body frames, and the exhaust system have been given a uniform matte blacked-out treatment. Bajaj is offering the motorcycle in two premium color palettes: Ebony Black and Cocktail Wine Red.

AutoIndiaDaily Analysis: Bajaj’s Value Engineering is Hard to Match

Bajaj Auto’s move to launch the bajaj avenger 220 street cruiser at just ₹1.29 lakh is a masterclass in market pricing. At a time when entry-level premium commuter bikes easily cross the ₹1.50 lakh mark, offering a comfortable long-wheelbase cruiser with 19 horsepower under ₹1.30 lakh gives Bajaj an immediate monopoly.

The Avenger brand has survived for over a decade with very few mechanical upgrades, simply because no other manufacturer has managed to build an affordable cruiser to compete against it.

By moving the 220cc engine into the Street body shell, Bajaj is targeting a massive group of city commuters who wanted the bulletproof reliability of the 220cc block but were put off by the excessive chrome and impractical tube-type spoke wheels of the Cruise.

Swapping in alloy wheels and tubeless tires directly addresses the biggest ownership headache for daily commuters. Even with a slight 3kg weight penalty, the flatter handlebar geometry will make filtering through dense metro traffic far easier. This launch will single-handedly protect Bajaj’s 100% market share in the budget cruiser segment.
