JSW-MG Motor India is preparing an all-new JSW MG Upcoming Mid Size SUV that will eventually replace the MG Astor and the MG ZS EV in the Indian market. The upcoming model is expected to arrive around 2027 and will be built on a new modular architecture designed to support multiple powertrain types.

The move marks a significant shift in MG’s product strategy in India, as the company looks to introduce a new generation of SUVs based on a flexible platform capable of supporting internal combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains.

New Platform to Support Multiple Powertrains

The JSW MG Upcoming Mid Size SUV is expected to be underpinned by MG’s SIGMA (SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture) platform. This modular architecture already supports several MG models sold internationally, including the MG One SUV.

One of the key advantages of the SIGMA platform is its flexibility. It has been engineered to accommodate petrol engines, fully electric systems and hybrid setups, allowing the manufacturer to develop multiple vehicle types using a single base architecture.

For the Indian market, this approach would allow MG to offer both conventional petrol models and electrified variants within the same SUV lineup.

The JSW MG Upcoming Mid Size SUV is expected to gradually replace the Astor and the ZS EV, both of which are currently positioned in the mid-size SUV segment.

MG launched the ZS EV in India in 2020, making it one of the early entrants in the country’s electric SUV market. The Astor, which followed a year later, was introduced as its internal combustion counterpart.

However, the Astor did not achieve the same level of success as some of its rivals in the segment. The new platform-based SUV is expected to address this by offering improved technology, updated design elements and broader powertrain options.

While detailed design information has not yet been revealed, the new model is expected to differ from global products such as the MG One, despite sharing the same platform architecture.

Positioned for the Competitive Mid-Size SUV Segment

The mid-size SUV category remains one of the most competitive segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Models in this class compete directly with established products such as the Hyundai Creta and several other compact SUVs.

With the new architecture, MG is expected to strengthen its position in this segment by introducing next-generation connectivity features, advanced safety technologies and electrified powertrains.

This strategy would allow the brand to cater to a wider range of customers, including those looking for conventional petrol SUVs as well as buyers interested in hybrid or electric alternatives.

Broader Product Expansion Planned

The Astor and ZS EV replacement is part of a wider product expansion plan by JSW-MG Motor India. The company has several new vehicles scheduled for launch over the next few years.

The first major launch expected is the IM6 electric vehicle, which is likely to arrive by October this year and will be sold through MG’s premium Select retail channel.

Another model currently under development is a plug-in hybrid SUV positioned to rival vehicles in the Mahindra XUV700 segment. This product is expected to debut by the end of 2026 and could become India’s first mass-market plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

Investment in New Platforms and Technologies

JSW-MG Motor India has also announced plans to invest up to USD 440 million to expand its production capacity and develop new energy vehicles for the Indian market.

The company has relied heavily on the MG Windsor EV, which became India’s best-selling electric car in 2025, while some of its earlier models have recorded comparatively lower sales.

With new platforms, updated powertrains and multiple upcoming launches, MG is aiming to refresh its portfolio and strengthen its position in India’s rapidly evolving SUV and EV market.

The JSW MG Upcoming Mid Size SUV0- Astor and ZS EV successor, expected in 2027, will play a central role in this strategy by introducing a new modular platform capable of supporting a broader range of vehicle technologies.
