Tata Motors is working on plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup. The company is developing an all-new midsize electric SUV, internally codenamed ‘Kuno’. This upcoming electric SUV could launch in the Indian market around 2027-28 and is expected to be its primary competitor from the MG Windsor EV.

With an approximate length of 4.3 meters, the Tata Kuno EV could be positioned between the next-generation Nexon EV and Sierra EV in the company’s existing electric SUV lineup. This would give Tata Motors a new product in the midsize electric SUV segment, where a spacious cabin, practical range, and family-friendly features are important factors for buyers.
Kuno is currently just a project codename. There is no confirmation whether Tata Motors will launch a production model with this name.

MG Windsor EV to Get a New Competitor
The Tata Kuno EV is estimated to be 4.3 meters in size. With this positioning, it could find its place between Tata’s existing Curvv EV and the upcoming Sierra EV. Its main target will be models like the MG Windsor EV, which are popular for their spacious cabin and family-oriented practicality.
Tata Motors could develop this electric SUV on its dedicated Acti.ev platform. This architecture supports different body styles and powertrain configurations, including front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), and all-wheel drive (AWD) options.
An important advantage of a dedicated EV platform is battery packaging. A flat floor and optimized battery placement can lead to better space utilization within the cabin. This feature will be important for the Kuno, as the company plans to position it as a family-focused midsize electric SUV.
Production May Take Place at Sanand Plant
Tata Motors’ Gujarat-based Sanand facility has been named as a manufacturing location. According to reports, the company may plan an annual production capacity of between 80,000 and 100,000 units for this upcoming electric SUV.
If this production plan is finalized, it would indicate that Tata Motors intends to make the Kuno an important volume model in its EV strategy. However, the company has not officially confirmed the manufacturing location and production capacity.
The Kuno could also be part of Tata Motors’ broader electric vehicle expansion plan. At its June 2026 Investor Day, the company announced a target of expanding its EV lineup from six models to 10 models by FY2031.

Tata Kuno EV Battery, Powertrain, and Range Expectations

Currently, Tata Motors has not revealed details of the Tata Kuno EV battery pack, electric motor, power output, or driving range. However, considering the existing powertrain options of the Curvv EV and Sierra EV, the upcoming model could use the company’s current EV components.
The Tata Curvv EV comes with a 55kWh battery pack, paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing 167hp and 215Nm. The company claims a range of 502km for this model.
The Sierra EV, on the other hand, comes with 65kWh and 75kWh battery options. Their claimed driving range is 535km and 665km, respectively. Its powertrain lineup includes single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD configurations.
It is not yet clear which battery pack or motor configuration will be selected for the Kuno EV. Given its midsize positioning, there could be a possibility of higher variants with a claimed range of more than 450km, but this should not be considered a confirmed specification yet.
Inside the cabin, features like a large touchscreen infotainment system, fully digital instrument cluster, Level 2 ADAS and a panoramic sunroof are expected. Tata Motors is yet to officially confirm these features.
Tata Kuno EV Expected Price and Rivals
The pricing strategy of the Tata Kuno EV is not yet known. The price brackets of the Curvv EV and Sierra EV may provide some indication of its expected positioning.
Currently, the Curvv EV is priced between Rs. 17.19 lakh and Rs. 19.39 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Sierra EV is priced between Rs. 18.79 lakh and Rs. 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Kuno EV could be positioned between these two models, but the final price will depend on battery capacity, motor configuration, features, and variant lineup.
The MG Windsor EV could be a key rival. Additionally, its competition with upcoming midsize electric SUVs could increase.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The Tata Kuno EV could become an important addition to the company’s electric vehicle strategy. Its approximately 4.3-meter size, dedicated Acti.ev platform, and MG Windsor EV-focused positioning could make it an interesting option for family buyers.
However, key details such as battery capacity, range, motor output, final design, and pricing have not yet been revealed. With an expected launch timeline of 2027-28, Tata Motors still has time to finalize a production model.
If the company offers a spacious cabin, practical driving range and useful technology along with competitive pricing, the Kuno EV could further strengthen Tata’s position in the Indian midsize electric SUV market.
