New Dacia Spring EV Debuts With 250 km Range, Bigger Size & More Power

The Dacia Spring EV in Europe has received a second-generation update, and the new model features a significant transformation compared to the previous-generation car.

This electric city car is now based on the Renault Group’s RGEV Small platform and comes with larger dimensions, a bigger battery, and a more powerful motor compared to the previous model.

Interestingly, the New Dacia Spring EV definitely shares its connection with the Renault Kwid sold in India, but it wouldn’t be correct to view the new-generation model as a direct electric version of the India-spec Kwid. The new Spring, developed for Europe, now shifts to the Renault Group’s latest small-EV architecture.

New Dacia Spring EV Gets a Much Larger Body

The second-generation Spring has seen a significant increase in dimensions. The new model is 150 mm longer and 180 mm wider, resulting in a larger cabin and overall road presence compared to the previous model.

Weight has also increased substantially. The kerb weight of the new Spring is 1,212 kg, compared to around 984 kg for the original model.

In terms of design, Dacia has made an almost complete departure from the old car. The previous split-headlamp arrangement has been replaced by a boxier and more upright silhouette. The front end has been given a more rugged appearance with a short bonnet and cab-forward stance.

The enclosed three-dimensional grille at the front is visually integrated with the headlamps, while the lower bumper features textured black elements and slim air openings.

J-Shaped LED Lighting Adds a New Identity

The lighting design of the New Dacia Spring EV is also quite distinct. The front and rear light clusters feature detailing inspired by Dacia’s brand identity.

The overall shape of the LED elements is modern and distinctive, while the chunky bumper, black textured trim, and roof-mounted spoiler in the rear section create an SUV-inspired stance.

Cabin Looks Similar to the New Twingo EV

In the interior, the dashboard layout of the New Dacia Spring EV is influenced by Renault Group’s latest small EVs. The overall design shares similarities with the new Renault Twingo EV, although Dacia has added its own styling touches.

The dashboard features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch free-standing touchscreen. The center console also houses the electric parking brake along with multiple storage areas.

The upper dashboard has been given a more angular finish instead of the previous car’s simpler body-colored treatment. The overall cabin focuses on practicality and easy-to-use controls.

Bigger 27.5 kWh Battery Offers 250 km Range

On the mechanical side, the most significant upgrade to the new Dacia Spring is the battery pack. The previous 24.3 kWh battery is now replaced by a 27.5 kWh LFP battery.

According to Dacia, the new Spring delivers up to 250 km of WLTP range. This is a particularly useful figure for a city-focused EV, although real-world range will vary depending on driving conditions and temperature.

The electric motor is also new. It produces 80.5 bhp and 175 Nm, while a 0-100 kmph acceleration time is claimed at 12.1 seconds.

The outgoing Spring EV in comparison was available in different versions with 70 bhp and 100 bhp outputs, but both versions generated 137 Nm.

New Spring Supports 50 kW DC Fast Charging

The new model has also received upgrades to charging hardware. The standard car comes with a 6.6 kW onboard charger, while buyers can choose a 7 kW wallbox option.

Selecting the Fast Charge package increases AC charging capability to 11 kW. Additionally, the new Spring supports 50 kW DC fast charging.

According to Dacia, it takes around 28 minutes to charge the battery from 15-80 percent using a DC charger.

New Dacia Spring EV vs Renault Kwid EV: India Connection

The Dacia Spring and Renault Kwid certainly have a historical connection, particularly due to the design and architecture similarities between the first-generation models. However, the new Dacia Spring is based on the Renault Group’s RGEV Small platform, so calling it simply the electric Kwid launched in Europe would not be technically accurate.

The Renault Kwid in India is currently positioned as an affordable ICE hatchback. Given the New Spring’s Europe-focused architecture and specifications, its India launch has not yet been confirmed.

If Renault India adapts this platform or technology for the local market in the future, it could have interesting potential in the affordable electric hatchback segment. For now, speculation about an India launch shouldn’t be taken as confirmation.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The New Dacia Spring EV has evolved from a simple low-cost city EV into a much more mature package. Larger dimensions, a 27.5 kWh LFP battery, a 250 km WLTP range, and 50 kW DC charging make it clearly more capable than the previous generation.

The Renault Kwid EV angle is naturally interesting due to its India connection, but it would be premature to call the new Spring a direct electric successor to the current Indian Kwid. Currently, it is a Europe-focused model, and there is no official confirmation from Renault on its arrival in India.
