The overall concept is familiar, but Aprilia has made significant changes to the mechanical package. The most noticeable update is the 14-inch wheels, which replace the 12-inch wheels on the previous SXR models.

The new SXR GT models continue Aprilia’s familiar maxi-scooter design and sporty styling, but the underlying mechanical package has been updated. Both variants use the company’s new hp-e engines, which are also available in the SR range.

The most significant hardware change is the 14-inch wheels. The previous SXR 125 and SXR 160 came with 12-inch wheels, while the new Aprilia SXR GT 125 and SXR GT 175 come with 14-inch wheels on both the front and rear.

Both scooters also feature telescopic front suspension and twin rear shock absorbers. Braking hardware includes a 220mm front disc and a 140mm rear drum setup.

The Aprilia SXR GT 125 is powered by a 124.5cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine that develops 10.6hp at 7,400rpm and 10.4Nm at 6,200rpm.

The engine is BS6 OBD-II Stage B compliant and also offers E20 fuel compatibility. The 125cc version features CBS for braking, while the larger SXR GT 175 offers ABS.

Speaking of features, the SXR GT 125 features a 5-inch LCD instrument cluster. This is a simpler unit compared to the TFT setup in the 175cc version.

The SXR GT 175 is powered by a larger 174.7cc engine, which produces 13.3hp at 7,200rpm and 14.1Nm at 6,000rpm. It is also BS6 OBD-II Stage B compliant and E20 compatible.

The biggest advantage of the 175cc version isn’t just the larger engine. Aprilia has positioned this variant with additional technology. It features a 5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity, music and call controls, and turn-by-turn navigation.

Additional handlebar switches are also provided. The braking setup gets single-channel ABS, which clearly differentiates it from the CBS setup of the SXR GT 125.

14-Inch Wheels Could Improve Ride Stability

The most interesting hardware change for the SXR GT range is the 14-inch wheels. Compared to the 12-inch wheels of previous SXR scooters, larger wheels could help provide better stability on rough roads and broken surfaces.

With its maxi-scooter design, larger wheels could also give the SXR GT a more planted character on the road. However, the actual ride quality and suspension tuning differences will only be clearly established after a proper road test.

Twin shock absorbers have been retained in the rear suspension, while a five-step setting for rear preload adjustment is available on the SXR GT 125.

Accessories Also Available

Aprilia also offers factory accessories for the SXR GT range. Buyers can choose from options such as a larger manually adjustable windscreen, a perimeter protection kit, and a rear top box.

These accessories can further enhance the scooter’s touring and practicality-focused character, especially for buyers who plan to use the maxi-scooter for longer-distance riding.

SXR GT 175 vs Honda ADV160

The SXR GT 175 is an interesting comparison with the Honda ADV160 in terms of price positioning. According to sources, the Honda ADV160 has a starting price of Rs. 1.70 lakh ex-showroom, which makes it around Rs. 39,000 more expensive than the SXR GT 175.

The Honda ADV160’s 157cc liquid-cooled engine produces 16.3hp, so Honda has the edge in outright performance numbers. Aprilia, however, offers 14-inch wheels, ABS, a connected TFT, and a maxi-scooter body at a lower price.

The SXR GT 125’s positioning is slightly different. At a price point of Rs. 1.11 lakh, it also competes with premium 125cc scooters. The Aprilia’s advantage is its larger maxi-scooter design and 14-inch wheels, but buyers will have to justify the higher price compared to mainstream 125cc scooters.

Auto India Daily Verdict

Aprilia hasn’t revived the SXR name with just cosmetic updates. Changes like 14-inch wheels, updated hp-e engines, and TFT, connectivity, and ABS in the 175cc variant make the new SXR GT range a more comprehensive update than previous models.

The Aprilia SXR GT 125, priced at Rs. 1.11 lakh, targets buyers looking for maxi-scooter styling and larger wheels, while the SXR GT 175, priced at Rs. 1.31 lakh, offers a stronger package with a more powerful engine and additional technology.
