Tesla Roadster Reservations Open in India, But There’s a Catch for Buyers

Tesla has opened reservations in India for its upcoming all-electric sports car, the New Tesla Roadster. According to reports that surfaced on October 17, 2026, Indian customers can access the reservation process for the Performance and Thrust configurations.

However, it would be incorrect to consider this an India launch announcement, as the car’s final price, delivery timeline in India, and local regulatory approvals are not yet confirmed.

Tesla aims to begin production of the Roadster in 2028. According to the company, initial production vehicles will be in left-hand-drive configuration. This means that despite reservations being available in India, the timing of the car’s actual delivery and road use is not yet clear.

According to media reports, the initial payment for the Performance and Thrust versions in Tesla India’s reservation process is approximately ₹5.01 lakh. Additional payments required after this vary depending on the configuration.

The reported total reservation payment for the Performance configuration is approximately ₹50.06 lakh, while the total reported amount for the Thrust configuration reaches approximately ₹2.50 crore. According to reports, the remaining payment may need to be made within 10 days of reservation.

It’s important to understand here: these figures are reported amounts associated with the reservation process, not confirmed final ex-showroom prices. Final vehicle price, taxes, import-related costs, delivery charges, and India-specific purchase conditions will need to be confirmed separately.

What is the difference between the Performance, Thrust, & Rocket versions of the Tesla Roadster?

The Tesla Roadster is offered in three configurations: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket. Each version has a different purpose and hardware.

Performance: This is the standard configuration. It features active aerodynamics and the company’s suction-based grip system. This version does not have optional cold-gas thrusters.

Thrust: This configuration includes the Performance version’s features along with additional rear-mounted acceleration thrusters. Tesla’s presentation showcased thruster technology in the context of high-performance driving and airborne maneuvers.

Rocket: This is a single-seat configuration described as featuring a full flight system. Currently, it is invitation-only and, according to Tesla, is not approved for use on public roads.

The Rocket version has generated the most excitement, but it would not be considered available as a standard road-going electric sports car. The final availability of these configurations in India will also depend on applicable legal requirements and approvals.

How powerful will the new Tesla Roadster be?

Tesla has made ambitious performance claims for the new Roadster. The company presentation stated a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of less than one second, while a reported top speed exceeds 370 km/h.

The car’s design is aerospace-inspired, drawing inspiration from the SR-71 aircraft and the F-35 fighter jet. Tesla has also mentioned components developed with SpaceX. A demonstration of the Roadster demonstrated unusual maneuvers using a suction-based system and thrusters.

However, complete technical specifications of the final production model have not yet been revealed. Details such as battery capacity, motor output, production-spec range, and how much of the technology demonstrated will be available in customer vehicles should not be considered confirmed specifications.

Will the Tesla Roadster ever be delivered to India?

The biggest question currently is the delivery timeline. Tesla has targeted production for 2028, but the company has not announced a confirmed delivery date for India. Making a reservation does not guarantee purchase or delivery of the vehicle.

The next-generation version of the Tesla Roadster was first unveiled in 2017, but the production timeline has been delayed several times since. Given this history, it would be inappropriate for prospective buyers to interpret current reservations as a guaranteed delivery commitment.

Road approval is another important factor in India. The Rocket configuration is not approved for public-road use. Availability of other configurations will also depend on applicable regional laws and regulatory requirements.

What should buyers check before making a reservation in India?

Buyers should carefully read Tesla’s India-specific terms before paying the reservation amount. In particular, it is important to understand the terms related to refund eligibility, cancellation rules, additional payment deadlines, and final price.

The terms in the US reservation agreement cannot be automatically assumed to apply to Indian customers. India-specific refund terms and final purchase conditions should be verified during the actual booking process.

Buyers should also note that the reservation amount does not represent the final on-road budget. The actual ownership cost can only be estimated after the vehicle’s final price, taxes, delivery expenses, and registration-related requirements have been confirmed.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The India reservation availability of the new Tesla Roadster is an interesting development for enthusiasts of electric performance cars. However, it would be premature to call it a confirmed India launch or a near-term delivery announcement.

The reported reservation amounts for the Performance and Thrust configurations are quite substantial, while the final price, delivery schedule, and India-specific regulatory status are not yet clear. Therefore, interested buyers should verify the official terms before making a payment and should not consider a reservation equivalent to guaranteed vehicle delivery.
