Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV Spotted for the First Time, 2027 Launch Expected

Tata Motors’ popular electric SUV is about to get a next-generation upgrade. The Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV has been spotted for the first time in test mules, internally codenamed Garuda.

Previously, test mules of the next-gen Nexon with a petrol engine have also surfaced, but the latest sighting is of the electric version.

This time, the camouflaged prototype was not seen driving on a public road, but being transported on a flatbed truck. The sighting reveals the SUV’s overall silhouette and some underbody details. The presence of orange-colored high-voltage cables and the battery enclosure below the passenger compartment highlight the prototype’s electric identity.

The next-generation Nexon and Nexon EV are expected to launch in 2027. However, Tata Motors has not yet confirmed the official launch timeline or technical specifications of the new electric model.

Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV: Battery and Platform Details

Spy sightings show the battery enclosure positioned below the passenger compartment. Orange-colored cables are also visible in its front section and near the rear wheel area. These high-voltage cables are a crucial part of the electric powertrain and clearly indicate that the prototype will be an EV.

The new Nexon range is expected to shift to the ATLAS platform. According to sources, this will be a heavily re-engineered derivative of the existing X1 platform. This change could allow Tata Motors to revise the packaging of the battery pack and other components of the electric powertrain.

Whether the new Nexon EV’s battery pack will be larger than the current model’s has not yet been confirmed. Important details such as battery capacity, claimed driving range, motor output, and charging speeds remain undisclosed. Therefore, it is premature to claim any specific range or performance improvements.

Current Tata Nexon EV Battery and Range

The Tata Nexon EV is currently available in India with two battery options: 30 kWh and 45 kWh. The current model’s claimed range with the larger battery pack is up to 489 km on a single charge. Both battery options support DC fast charging.

The Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV model is likely to see an increase in battery capacity, but it’s not yet confirmed which battery packs Tata Motors will offer in the new model. The final range will depend on battery size, vehicle weight, powertrain efficiency, and other technical factors.

Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV Design: Upright Profile Instead of Coupe-Like Shape?

Despite the heavy camouflage, there are some significant changes to the prototype’s proportions. The current Nexon EV’s rear section maintains a relatively sloping, coupe-like profile, while the new test mule’s roofline appears flatter and the tailgate appears comparatively upright.

The A-pillar stance also appears different from the current model. The overall design appears less flowing and more upright than the current model. If these proportions are retained in the production version, there could be additional room for rear-seat headroom and boot space. However, actual cabin space and luggage capacity will only be known once the production-spec model is revealed.

The prototype also shows the front doors, wing mirrors, and wheel arches. This test mule featured conventional pull-type door handles, but it is not yet confirmed whether the final production model will feature flush-fitting handles.

Large sections of the rear doors, roof, and tailgate are covered in thick fabric, concealing final design details. The prototype also features five-spoke wheels. Whether these are production wheels or just used for testing remains unconfirmed. A previous sighting also showed curved-style wheels, leaving open the possibility of different wheel options in the final design.

What changes could be expected in the interior and features?

The current EV prototype sighting doesn’t provide a clear view of the cabin. Therefore, no final conclusions can be drawn about the dashboard, touchscreen, instrument display, and climate controls.

Previously spotted test mules of the next-generation ICE Nexon featured a familiar-looking steering wheel, infotainment screen, and climate controls. It’s not yet clear how many of these elements Tata Motors will carry forward to the electric version.

The EV’s floor layout may also be influenced by the positioning and size of the battery pack. Therefore, aspects such as rear-seat comfort, floor height, and boot capacity should be considered tentative until the production model is revealed.

Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV Launch Timeline

The latest spy sightings indicate that the development process for the Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV is progressing. ICE and electric versions are expected to be developed in parallel, with both expected to launch in 2027. However, Tata Motors has not yet announced an official launch date.

Sources indicate Tata Motors’ upcoming Safari EV as the company’s next EV launch. Its expected arrival is next month, and it will be the company’s first three-row electric SUV. This timeline should be considered as expected until official confirmation.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The first sighting of the Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV offers a glimpse of potential changes to the design and underbody packaging. A more upright roofline and tailgate could give the SUV a new profile, while the shift to the ATLAS platform offers the possibility of changes to the battery and electric powertrain packaging.

However, the most important details—battery capacity, driving range, motor output, charging speed, and features – are not yet confirmed. A 2027 launch is expected, but final specifications and a timeline will only be known after an official announcement from Tata Motors.

For now, this spy sighting is considered an early indication of the Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV development.
