Turbo CNG Engine Delivers 111 hp and 200 Nm

The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG) is powered by a 1,197cc, three-cylinder, 1.2-liter mStallion TCMPFi turbocharged petrol engine. In CNG mode, this engine develops maximum power of 111 hp at 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 200 Nm between 1,500–3,500 rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard with this powertrain.

According to the company, the XUV 3XO ZNG can achieve a speed of 0–60 kmph in 4.9 seconds and 0–100 kmph in 11.8 seconds in CNG mode. Mahindra has also announced a claimed fuel efficiency of 24.7 km/kg for this SUV. Please note that this is the company’s claimed figure; actual mileage may vary depending on driving conditions, traffic, load and driving style.

Mahindra has specifically calibrated the turbocharger and ECU for the ZNG version. The CNG injection system operates at 10 bar pressure. This setup highlights that the Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG) isn’t simply a solution to add a CNG kit to a regular petrol SUV, but rather a factory-developed powertrain configuration.

CNG Cylinders, Boot Space, and Safety Features

The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG) two CNG cylinders are positioned beneath the luggage compartment. This arrangement is intended to keep the boot floor flat and maintain everyday practicality. The CNG version offers 270 liters of luggage space, while the regular petrol and diesel XUV 3XOs offer a boot capacity of 364 liters. The CNG system accounts for a difference of 94 liters. The spare wheel is positioned beneath the vehicle.

The SUV measures 3,990mm in length, 1,821mm in width, and 1,647mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2,600mm. These dimensions position it in the compact SUV category, but buyers should consider the compromise on boot space, especially if the vehicle is intended for family trips or regular luggage.

In terms of safety, Mahindra has made six airbags standard on all four ZNG variants. Additionally, there’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ISOFIX child-seat mounts, three-point seatbelts for each occupant, and rear parking sensors.

The regular model of the XUV 3XO achieved a five-star rating in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories in the Bharat NCAP crash tests. This rating relates to the assessment of the standard XUV 3XO; it should not be construed as a separately tested rating for the ZNG variant without specific confirmation.

The CNG system also features an integrated gas leak detector. If the system detects a leak, the engine can automatically switch to petrol mode. The powertrain also switches to petrol when the CNG supply runs out. The NGV is also equipped with a fast-filling valve, while the driver can also view average and instantaneous fuel-efficiency information.

Variant-Wise Features: MX Edge to RevX A

The entry-level MX Edge variant gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto, wired Apple CarPlay and a four-speaker audio system. The RevX Edge (O) variant gets Skyroof, electrically folding ORVMs, automatic headlamps, automatic wipers, push-button start and black leatherette upholstery. This trim also gets roof rails and dual-tone exterior finish, giving the SUV a comparatively premium appearance.

The AX5 variant further upgrades the feature list. It includes twin 10.25-inch displays, six-speaker audio system, AdrenoX connectivity, built-in Alexa and online navigation. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with dual-zone climate control, tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), 65W Type-C charger, LED projector headlamps and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels are also available.

The range-topping RevX A variant comes with a sunroof, Dolby Atmos audio, black leatherette seats, dual-tone paint and 16-inch black alloy wheels. This variant is priced at Rs. 12.27 lakh ex-showroom, making it the most expensive option in the lineup.

Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG): What Does It Mean for Buyers?

The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG) main selling point is its combination of a turbocharged CNG engine and SUV-style practicality. 111 hp power, 200 Nm torque, and a six-speed manual gearbox make it an interesting option for buyers seeking stronger performance compared to conventional CNG vehicles.

But three points should be considered before making a purchase decision:

The claimed 24.7 km/kg efficiency may vary in real-world conditions, boot capacity is limited to 270 liters due to the CNG setup, and there are noticeable differences in features between available variants. Buyers should choose a trim based on their daily driving, luggage requirements, and preferred equipment.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG (CNG) is a noteworthy option for customers who want turbocharged performance with factory-fitted CNG.

Standard six airbags and multiple trim choices add to its appeal. It would be sensible to evaluate the test drive, boot-space practicality and expected running costs on your route before making a final decision.
