The weekend of the Formula 1 Mexican GP 2026 became a memorable one for motorsport fans. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 71-lap race in Mexico City on Sunday, November 1, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished second.
But the biggest moment of the race belonged to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who secured his first Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship title by finishing third.

Antonelli’s achievement is also special because at the age of 20, he became the youngest-ever World Champion in Formula 1 history. With this, he also broke Sebastian Vettel’s record of being the youngest champion. For the Italian driver, the Mexico City podium was not just a race result, but a historic milestone in his career.

Max Verstappen Wins Mexican GP 2026 After Intense Battle

Max Verstappen won the Mexican GP 2026 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after starting from fifth position. The Red Bull driver crossed the checkered flag with a total time of 2:20:28.772. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was just 0.799 seconds behind him, keeping the race competitive until the final laps.
Hamilton started the race from pole position, but his intense battle with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in the opening laps altered the front-running order. Both drivers were side-by-side in the opening corners and after the incident, Leclerc received a five-second time penalty for taking advantage through track limits.
Verstappen took advantage of this situation. The Dutch driver overtook Hamilton on the opening lap to take second position and later moved into the lead after Leclerc served his penalty during the pit-stop sequence. Verstappen handled Hamilton’s pressure for the remainder of the race and maintained his position.
This was Verstappen’s third Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season. Tyre strategy was also an important aspect of his performance. While many front-runners started the race with soft tires, Verstappen chose medium tires, giving him the option of a different strategy in the opening stint.
Kimi Antonelli Becomes Youngest-Ever F1 World Champion
Before the Mexican GP 2026, Kimi Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish or better to secure the Drivers’ Championship. The Mercedes driver started the race in fourth position and, despite difficult race conditions, managed to reach third place.

Antonelli finished behind Verstappen with a gap of 4.006 seconds. This result confirmed his maiden Formula 1 World Championship title. By winning the title at the age of 20, he broke Sebastian Vettel’s record for youngest F1 champion.
This is also a historic achievement for Italy. Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Thus, Italian motorsport gained a new world champion after 73 years.
The hallmarks of Antonelli’s title campaign were his consistency and performance under pressure. He delivered multiple strong results for Mercedes throughout the season and had firmly established his hold on the championship by the time they arrived in Mexico. A podium finish at the Mexican GP put the final stamp on his title-winning campaign.
Red Flag and Safety Car Made the Race More Challenging
The Mexican Grand Prix wasn’t just a battle between front-runners. A red flag was deployed after Valtteri Bottas’s heavy accident mid-race. The accident forced a temporary halt for barrier repairs, which affected teams’ strategies and drivers’ racing rhythm.
The action didn’t end even after the race restart. Arvid Lindblad’s crash led to a late Safety Car deployment, narrowing the gap between Verstappen and Hamilton in the final laps. Hamilton kept the pressure on Verstappen after the restart, but the Ferrari driver couldn’t find a clear overtaking opportunity.
The race was also challenging for Mercedes’ George Russell. He received a 10-second time penalty for contact with Isaac Hadjar on the opening lap. Russell finished the race in sixth position, while Antonelli managed to finish on the podium.

2026 F1 Season Is Not Over Yet: Brazilian GP Is Next
Even after Kimi Antonelli won the Drivers’ Championship, the 2026 Formula 1 season is not complete. The Mexican Grand Prix was the 19th round on the calendar, and the Brazilian, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix remain in the season.
The 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix will be held in Brazil between November 6–8. After this, the F1 calendar will move towards Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. The Drivers’ title has been decided, but the competition between the teams for the Constructors’ Championship and remaining race victories will continue.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The Mexican GP 2026 delivered two different stories in a single race. Max Verstappen started from fifth position and secured an impressive victory, while Kimi Antonelli etched his name in Formula 1 history with a third-place finish.
Antonelli becoming the youngest-ever World Champion is also a major achievement for Mercedes. Now, the focus will be on the Constructors’ Championship and individual race performances in the remaining four rounds of the season. A new champion may have been crowned in Mexico City, but the final checkered flag of the 2026 F1 season is still a long way off.
