LANXESS and BPCL Partnership: What is the objective of this MoU?

Under this MoU, LANXESS and BPCL will explore collaboration on advanced industrial lubricants, additive technologies, and related specialty products. Proposed areas include high-performance bearing and circulating oils, premium hydraulic fluids, turbine oils, refrigeration lubricants, rust preventive oils, and specialty greases.
This agreement has been established as a non-exclusive framework. This means that both companies will evaluate technical and commercial opportunities, but actual projects and commercialization will depend on applicable approvals and definitive agreements.
Product localization is also an important aspect of the partnership. Both companies will explore opportunities for joint technical evaluations, field trials, OEM engagement, and knowledge exchange. This could help develop lubricant solutions tailored to the requirements of Indian industrial customers.

LANXESS’s Global Expertise and BPCL’s Indian Network
In this collaboration, both companies will combine their respective strengths. LANXESS will contribute its global lubricant additive expertise, formulation capabilities, and OEM relationships. BPCL’s domestic market presence, base oil portfolio, manufacturing infrastructure, and customer reach will support this partnership.

KARAM FADDOUL, Head of Sales IMEA, Business Unit Lubricant Additives, LANXESS, said that together with BPCL, the company intends to bring localized and high-performance lubricant solutions closer to customers in India.
According to Neelanjan Banerjee, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Business Unit Lubricant Additives at LANXESS, the aim is to combine the technology and manufacturing capabilities of both companies to develop lubricant solutions that address the changing requirements of Indian industries.
BPCL Business Head Kannan S also described this collaboration as an important step towards joint research, innovation, and development. According to him, the partnership can help address future technological challenges along with current industrial requirements.
Focus will also be on EV Fluids and Sustainable Technologies
The scope of this partnership is not limited to traditional industrial lubricants. LANXESS and BPCL will also assess opportunities in next-generation and sustainable technologies.
These include bio-based lubricants, electric vehicle fluids, hydrogen economy applications, and specialty refrigeration fluids. The importance of specialized fluids is also increasing with the expansion of the EV industry, as the requirements of electric powertrains and battery-related systems differ from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
Both companies will also explore immersion cooling solutions for data centers. As digital infrastructure and data processing requirements grow, the demand for efficient cooling technologies is also growing. Specialty fluids could play an important role in such applications in the future.
What is its significance for the Indian automotive industry?
The proposed collaboration between LANXESS and BPCL could support the development of advanced lubricant technologies and specialty fluid solutions in India. Locally developed solutions may be useful in the future for automotive manufacturers, industrial equipment makers, and OEMs.
Research and technical collaboration, particularly in areas such as EV fluids, sustainable lubricants, and advanced cooling technologies, creates opportunities to address the evolving requirements of the industry.
Currently, this MoU is a framework to explore collaboration, not a confirmation of a specific product launch or commercial rollout. However, the combined capabilities of both companies certainly set an important direction for future development in India’s industrial lubrication ecosystem.
