According to him, demand for the Chetak electric scooter continues to outpace production. Even with improvements in production capacity, further expansion is required to meet this demand.

Increasing Bajaj Chetak Production Capacity

Previously, Bajaj Auto was unable to fully utilize its available production capacity for the Chetak due to supply-related disruptions. Against a capacity of approximately 60,000 units per month, the company was only able to produce around 40,000 scooters.

Production has now reportedly returned to full available capacity; however, demand still exceeds output. Bajaj plans to remove remaining capacity bottlenecks, with the goal of reaching a monthly production volume of approximately 80,000 units by Q4 FY2027.

This expansion should help the company better manage the growing demand for electric scooters. Ultimately, however, the actual production target will depend on factors such as the supply chain, manufacturing efficiency, and market demand.

Bajaj Auto Also Evaluating a Sixth Manufacturing Plant

Alongside the Bajaj Chetak production expansion, Bajaj Auto is working to strengthen its broader manufacturing operations. The company is currently facing capacity constraints in the production of both premium motorcycles and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

According to Rakesh Sharma, Bajaj Auto is in discussions with several Indian states regarding the location for a potential sixth manufacturing plant. A cross-functional team is currently evaluating various locations and proposals.

The company has not yet announced the location, investment amount, production capacity, or construction timeline for the proposed plant. Therefore, we will have to wait for further details regarding the new facility.

Electric Scooters Could Account for Half of India’s Scooter Sales

According to Bajaj Auto, electric scooters currently account for approximately 25 percent of total scooter sales in India. With Bajaj Chetak production set to increase amid rising EV demand, the company expects electric scooters’ share of the market to reach 50 percent over the next three to five years.

The adoption of electric scooters varies significantly across different states. According to Sharma, EV penetration is around 40 percent in Odisha, 30–35 percent in Maharashtra, and approximately 10–12 percent in Gujarat.

If the adoption of electric scooters continues to grow at this rate, manufacturers may need to make additional investments in production capacity and distribution networks. The expansion of Bajaj’s Chetak production is a significant step toward addressing this potential growth.

Bajaj Chetak Production Range to Expand Over the Next Six Months

Bajaj Auto has also shared plans to expand its Chetak range. The company intends to broaden its lineup over the next six months to cater to a wider range of customer requirements.

At present, Bajaj has not confirmed whether these upcoming additions will consist of new variants, different battery configurations, or entirely new models. Consequently, the exact details of the future Chetak range remain unclear.

With the planned expansion in Bajaj Chetak production, customers may get a wider choice of electric scooters across different price points, riding ranges and features. The exact details of the new models or variants will become clear once Bajaj Auto makes an official announcement.

Auto India Daily Verdict

Bajaj Auto’s target to increase Bajaj Chetak production to 80,000 units per month underscores the growing demand within the electric scooter market. Addressing supply constraints will be crucial for the company, especially given that current demand reportedly exceeds production capacity.

The evaluation of a sixth manufacturing plant and the expansion of the Chetak range are also part of the company’s longer-term plans.

It remains to be seen whether Bajaj can achieve its production target by Q4 FY2027, and what new options will be introduced to the Chetak lineup in the coming months.
