India’s passenger vehicle (PV) market achieved a new milestone in October 2026. October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales are estimated to cross the 5 lakh units mark for the first time, driven by strong demand and dealership inventory build-up ahead of the festive season.
According to industry estimates, domestic PV dispatches in October 2026 could range between approximately 5.25 lakh and 5.30 lakh units.

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales in October 2025 were around 4.6 lakh units. In comparison, the industry’s October 2026 performance could represent approximately 13–15% year-on-year growth. This growth is supported by strong monthly sales figures reported by leading manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hyundai.
This milestone is significant for the Indian automobile industry, but the impact of the festive calendar is also important to understand October’s wholesale numbers. With Dhanteras and Diwali falling in the first half of November 2026, automakers dispatched additional vehicles to dealerships in October to ensure sufficient stock was available for festive deliveries.

October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales: Industry Estimate Reaches 5.30 Lakh Units
Domestic October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales are estimated in the range of 5.25–5.30 lakh units. Maruti Suzuki’s Senior Executive Officer, Partho Banerjee, also estimated industry volumes to be in this range.
| Particulars | October 2026 | October 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic PV Wholesales | 5.25–5.30 lakh (Estimated) | Around 4.60 lakh |
| Estimated YoY Growth | 13–15% | — |
These October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales figures are industry estimates, not the final confirmed industry-wide sales tally. Dispatch figures reported by individual manufacturers and the overall industry estimate should be viewed with this distinction.
The growth in October is particularly noteworthy because the October 2025 base was already strong for comparison. Last year, buyers delayed purchases from mid-August to mid-September due to expectations of a GST rate cut. Demand recovered after the implementation of lower GST rates in the last week of September 2025, which had a positive impact on the festive season and October sales.
Maruti Suzuki Leads the Market with 2.12 Lakh Domestic Dispatches

India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, dispatched approximately 2.12 lakh domestic passenger vehicle units in October 2026. This represents around 20% year-on-year growth compared to October 2025.
Multiple segments contributed to the company’s strong performance. Small car sales increased 38% to 40,646 units in October, while SUV sales reached their highest-ever monthly level of 73,058 units.
Demand for CNG-powered vehicles also remained strong. Maruti Suzuki sold 87,000 CNG vehicles in October, contributing nearly 40% of the company’s total sales. However, CNG supply constraints are still affecting availability.
Maruti’s performance indicates that, along with compact cars, SUVs and alternative fuel options are also playing an important role in the company’s overall sales growth.

Tata Motors and Mahindra Report Strong SUV Performance
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported sales of 73,894 units in the domestic market in October 2026, a year-on-year growth of 21%. The company’s overall passenger vehicle performance was supported by domestic demand, as well as its international business and electric vehicle segments.
Mahindra & Mahindra recorded sales of 73,338 units in the domestic utility vehicle segment, an approximately 2% growth compared to 71,624 units in October 2025.
October was an important month for Mahindra, as the company highlighted strong demand for its SUV portfolio and the positive response to its refreshed product range. Demand for SUVs and utility vehicles during the festive season continued to support overall market momentum.
Hyundai Domestic Sales Grow 16.7% to 62,799 Units

Hyundai Motor India dispatched 62,799 passenger vehicles to the domestic market in October 2026. This represents 16.7% year-on-year growth compared to October 2025.
The company’s overall monthly sales were supported by strong performance in both the domestic market and exports. Hyundai reported total sales of 82,299 units in October, with exports contributing 19,500 units.
According to Tarun Garg, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motor India, strong festive demand and healthy momentum in the domestic and export markets helped the company achieve a new monthly sales record.

October Wholesales vs November Festive Retail Deliveries: Why the Difference Matters
To understand October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales dispatch numbers, it’s important to consider the difference between wholesale and retail sales.
Wholesale figures represent vehicles shipped from automakers to dealerships. Retail registrations reflect vehicles registered in the name of actual customers. The timing and monthly performance of both figures may differ.
According to Gaurav Vangaal, Associate Director for Light Vehicle Production Forecasting at Mobility Global, OEM dealership stocking contributed significantly to October wholesales due to Dhanteras and Diwali falling in the first half of November.
This means that despite record dispatches in October, the pattern of retail registrations may be different. October registrations may be lower compared to last year’s high festive base due to festive deliveries shifting to November.
Therefore, the October wholesale milestone should not be considered a complete picture of direct customer demand. November retail registrations and dealership inventory data will provide a clearer picture of the market’s actual festive demand.
GST Rate Cuts and Lower Borrowing Costs Support PV Market Growth
The Indian passenger vehicle market has maintained strong growth momentum following last year’s GST rate cuts. Lower vehicle prices helped improve affordability for buyers, while reductions in borrowing costs made vehicle financing relatively accessible.
Recent income tax reforms, providing consumers with additional disposable income, could also have a positive impact on demand.
In the first half of the current financial year, domestic passenger vehicle sales increased 28.3% year-on-year to 20.55 lakh units. This growth indicates that demand momentum in the Indian PV market is not limited to the festive season.
However, future market performance will depend on interest rates, vehicle affordability, product launches, inventory levels, and sustained demand after the festive season.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The estimated 5.25–5.30 lakh October 2026 Passenger Vehicle Sales number is a major milestone for the Indian automobile industry. Maruti Suzuki’s 20% growth, Tata Motors’ 21% growth, and Hyundai’s 16.7% domestic growth provided strong support to overall market performance, while Mahindra also maintained positive growth.
But it would be inaccurate to interpret this record as merely a reflection of retail demand. The impact of dealership stocking in October was also significant, given the occurrence of Dhanteras and Diwali in the first half of November.
Now, the retail registration numbers for November 2026 will be crucial. They will reveal how successfully the additional inventory dispatched in October reached customers and in which direction passenger vehicle demand moves after the festive season.
