Volvo has updated its compact luxury SUV XC40 for the 2028 model year. The 2028 Volvo XC40, which has been in the market for nearly a decade, has received a refreshed exterior design, updated cabin technology and a new mild-hybrid powertrain this time around.
Although it is not a full-generation change, Volvo has made enough updates to the SUV’s design and features to make it feel fresh in the lineup alongside its larger siblings XC60 and XC90.

What’s new in the 2028 Volvo XC40?

The most noticeable change in the 2028 XC40 is its front end. Volvo has given the SUV updated Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a sleeker grille, and a more sculpted hood. New wheel options have also been added to give the exterior a fresh look.
The standard setup includes 18-inch wheels, while buyers can also choose from 19-inch and new 20-inch wheels. The rear section features updated taillights, but overall the XC40’s familiar boxy silhouette remains largely unchanged.
Instead of completely replacing the XC40’s original design, Volvo has slightly modernized the same formula.
New 11.2-Inch Touchscreen in the Cabin

Interior changes are also relatively subtle, but from a technology perspective, represent a significant upgrade. The updated XC40 features Volvo’s 11.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, already seen in the brand’s newer models.
The new system runs on Volvo’s latest operating system and also offers Google Gemini AI integration. The screen is slightly angled toward the driver, which may make it easier to access controls while driving.
Volvo has also reduced the piano-black plastic in the cabin. The glossy finish on the center console remains, but soft-touch materials have been used in the air vents and some areas of the dashboard. This could give the cabin a slightly more premium and less fingerprint-prone feel.
Leather Seats and Orrefors Crystal Shifter
To further improve the premium feel, Volvo will offer optional leather seats and brown ash wood dashboard accents in the updated XC40.
The company’s signature Orrefors crystal shifter will also now be available in more trims in the US market. These changes are intended to make the XC40 slightly more upscale for luxury-focused compact SUV buyers.

2028 Volvo XC40 Gets New Safety Features

Safety has traditionally been a major selling point for Volvo, and the company hasn’t overlooked this area in the 2028 XC40.
The SUV’s optional 360-degree camera system has been upgraded. It now provides a 3D view, which can help drivers better understand the vehicle’s surroundings in tight parking spaces and difficult maneuvering situations.
Another useful feature is Door Opening Alert. This system can warn occupants if a potential hazard, such as a cyclist, is approaching the vehicle while the door is being opened.
Pilot Assist Can Now Perform Automatic Lane Changes
Volvo has also updated the XC40’s Pilot Assist driver-assistance system. This version adds automatic lane-change capability, making the system more capable during highway driving.
These updates are part of Volvo’s strategy to keep the XC40 competitive with modern driver-assistance technology.
2.0-Liter Mild-Hybrid Engine With 247 HP

The 2028 Volvo XC40 also receives major changes to its powertrain. The SUV features an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a mild-hybrid system.
This setup produces 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Power will be transferred to all four wheels and an eight-speed automatic gearbox handles transmission duties.

Pure ICE and EX40 Dropped in the US
Volvo is simplifying its US lineup with the 2028 model year. According to sources, the pure-ICE version of the XC40 will not be continued in the US, while the plug-in hybrid variant will also not be available.
In addition, the fully electric EX40 is also being dropped from the US market. This means that the updated XC40 will retain its position in Volvo’s compact SUV portfolio with a mild-hybrid powertrain for US buyers.
2028 Volvo XC40 Launch Date & Expected Price

Production of the updated XC40 is expected to begin in fall 2026, while the SUV could reach US dealerships by early 2027.
Volvo has not yet announced official pricing. However, according to sources, the starting price of the 2028 XC40 is expected to be in the low $40,000 range.
So, this should be considered an estimated figure until final pricing is announced.
Auto India Daily Verdict
Volvo has given the 2028 XC40 a sensible mid-cycle-style update rather than a complete redesign. New Thor’s Hammer headlights, an updated grille, a larger touchscreen, improved cabin materials, and additional safety technology modernize the SUV, while the familiar XC40 design has largely been retained.
The most interesting change is the powertrain. A 247-HP mild-hybrid setup, AWD, and an eight-speed automatic make the XC40 a straightforward premium compact SUV package in the US market. Additionally, dropping the EX40 is a noticeable shift in Volvo’s US lineup.
Overall, the 2028 Volvo XC40 is an evolution-focused update for buyers who like Volvo’s compact SUV design but also want newer technology and a mild-hybrid powertrain.
