Kia India has taken a significant step towards flex-fuel technology by unveiling the Syros Flex-Fuel Concept. This is Kia’s first flex-fuel vehicle concept in India, developed to run on petrol as well as different ethanol-petrol blends.
According to the company, the Kia Syros Flex-Fuel can operate on pure petrol, pure ethanol, and varying ethanol-petrol blends. However, Kia has not yet confirmed when the production-spec version of this concept will be launched in India.

With this development, Kia India joins the list of manufacturers working on ethanol-based alternative fuel technology. Maruti Suzuki has already showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel.

Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Gets 1.0L Turbo-Petrol Engine
The Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Concept features a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Kia has not yet revealed the engine’s exact power and torque output.
Compared to the standard Syros’ turbo-petrol setup, the flex-fuel version features several mechanical and electronic changes to handle different ethanol concentrations of fuel.
Kia has specifically upgraded the ECU, TCU, and fuel system. The primary purpose of these changes is to optimize engine management and fuel delivery for different ethanol-petrol blends.
Ethanol’s properties differ from conventional petrol, so the fuel system and engine calibration in a flex-fuel vehicle must be modified accordingly.
6-Speed Automatic Gearbox
The Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Concept also differs from the standard turbo-petrol Syros on the transmission front.
The concept features a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. A 7-speed DCT gearbox is available with the standard Syros turbo-petrol.
Kia has not yet confirmed whether the exact same transmission combination will be retained if the flex-fuel Syros enters production.
E85 Fuel Compatibility
The biggest highlight of the Kia Syros Flex-Fuel is its E85 compatibility. E85 fuel has a significantly higher ethanol content, and flex-fuel vehicles are specifically engineered to operate with different ethanol concentrations.
Kia says the concept can run on everything from pure petrol to pure ethanol and various petrol-ethanol blends.
Ethanol blending is being gradually increased in India, with the objective of reducing dependence on crude oil imports and supporting the domestic ethanol ecosystem. Flex-fuel technology is part of this broader transition.
No Major Changes in Exterior Design
Despite the flex-fuel technology, the exterior design of the Syros remains largely the same as the standard model.
The concept features the same boxy tall-boy silhouette, ice-cube-style LED headlamps with DRLs, and high-mounted L-shaped rear LED signatures.
In addition, SUV-style proportions, roof rails, dual-tone bumpers, and 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels give the overall design a familiar Syros look.
This means Kia hasn’t made any major visual changes to the Syros’ exterior design to showcase flex-fuel technology.

Cabin Also Remains Similar
The Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Concept’s interior is also closely related to the standard model.
The main highlight of the dashboard is the triple-screen setup, with separate screens for the digital instrument cluster, infotainment display, and HVAC-related controls.
The center section also continues to feature physical buttons that help operate important cabin functions.
The lower section retains the familiar layout of the wireless phone charging area, storage spaces, and gear selector. Overall, the cabin design hasn’t undergone any dramatic changes to accommodate flex-fuel technology.
When will the Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Production Version arrive?
Kia has not yet confirmed a launch timeline for the production version. Therefore, it would be more accurate to view the Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Concept as a technology showcase.
If Kia introduces this technology into a production vehicle in the future, changes to specifications, transmission, features, and fuel compatibility are possible in the final version.
This concept is important for the company because, with the increasing use of ethanol-blended fuels in India, it is becoming increasingly important for automakers to develop compatible powertrains.
Kia Becomes Second Carmaker to Showcase Flex-Fuel Car
With the unveiling of the Syros Flex-Fuel Concept, Kia India has become the second carmaker after Maruti Suzuki to showcase a flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India.
Maruti Suzuki previously showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel. Kia’s Syros-based concept demonstrates this technology with a turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine.
The broader objective of flex-fuel vehicles is to provide the flexibility to use higher ethanol-content fuels in addition to petrol. This could help adapt vehicles to India’s changing fuel mix in the future.
