The Mahindra Thar Electric has been spotted for the first time on public roads as a heavily camouflaged test vehicle. The prototype clearly shows design elements inspired by the Vision T concept, while the interior also bears some similarities with Mahindra’s latest SUVs.

Mahindra showcased the Thar.e concept in August 2023, followed by the Vision T concept in August 2025, which further clarified the design direction of this electric lifestyle SUV. Now, the latest spy shots indicate that Mahindra has taken this futuristic electric SUV into the actual road testing phase.
At present, the company has not officially confirmed the name, specifications, or launch timeline of the production-spec model. However, the latest test mule makes it clear that the upcoming electric Thar’s overall stance could be quite close to the concept.

Vision T Concept-like Front Design

The prototype’s front-end establishes the strongest connection with the Vision T concept. It features a broad grille with a two-level pattern of vertically arranged elements. Squarish headlamp housings flank both sides of this grille.
The headlights are likely to feature LED elements, although heavy camouflage and reflections make it difficult to identify the exact lighting signature. The flat clamshell-style bonnet, upright windscreen, and chunky front bumper give the SUV a concept-inspired boxy appearance.
The large rectangular ORVMs also appear to be inspired by the design language of the current Thar family. Pronounced wheel arches give the SUV a wide stance, while overall proportions have been maintained like a proper lifestyle SUV.
Five-Door Layout and Large Wheels
The side profile confirms that the test vehicle is coming with a five-door configuration. The flat roofline, upright pillars, and squared-off bodywork give it a distinct yet familiar look from traditional Thar proportions.
Flat side steps are also visible below the doors. These appear to be a production-friendly design compared to the exposed structural-style steps of the original Thar.e concept.

The large alloy wheels on the prototype are also noticeable. These could be approximately 19-inch or 20-inch in size, although the exact wheel size cannot be confirmed from the spy shots. The tires also appear more road-oriented than the aggressive off-road setup seen on the concepts.
Missing Spare Wheel in Rear Design
In the rear section, the test SUV is seen with a broad and upright tailgate. The large rear glass and chunky lower bumper continue the SUV’s boxy proportions.
The most interesting detail here is the missing externally mounted spare wheel. Compared to the Thar.e and Vision T concepts, the production prototype does not yet have a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
Mahindra may mount the spare wheel on the tailgate in the production version, similar to the approach seen on the Thar Roxx. However, this remains unconfirmed at this stage.
The rear lamps also appear to be temporary testing units. The prototype’s underbody area also hints at an independent rear suspension setup, along with a high-mounted stop lamp and a chunky lower bumper.
If this configuration is retained in the production model, it would be a major technical departure from the traditional rear-axle setup of the existing Thar family.
Digital Display and Large Screens Expected in the Interior

Only a limited portion of the cabin is visible in the spy images, but the illuminated digital instrument display is clearly visible. Substantial grab handles are also provided near the A-pillars, reinforcing the SUV’s rugged character.
The majority of the dashboard is hidden behind camouflage. However, elements such as a portrait-oriented central touchscreen, a separate horizontal instrument display, and a chunky center console were seen in the Vision T concept.
The recently unveiled Scorpio Lifestyler also featured a large portrait infotainment display. Therefore, the possibility of the future Thar Electric sharing Mahindra’s existing infotainment hardware or software architecture cannot be completely ruled out.
Current spy shots do not confirm the screen size, processor, operating system, or exact cabin layout.

Evolution from Thar.e to Vision T
Mahindra showcased the Thar.e concept in August 2023 on the INGLO-P1 platform. This concept reinterpreted the traditional Thar design in a futuristic electric SUV format.
The Vision T concept in August 2025 further developed this design direction. Alongside the Vision T, Mahindra also showcased the Vision SXT, and both concepts were part of the company’s broader NU_IQ product strategy.
Mahindra expects the broader NU_IQ rollout to begin in 2027, but the Thar Electric’s exact launch date hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Since the public-road testing phase has just begun, a production launch is likely in 2028 or later.
Mahindra has also filed design patents for the Vision T and Vision SXT, which reinforce the company’s future SUV design direction.
Mahindra Thar Electric to Face New Competition

Mahindra Thar Electric project is progressing at a time when India’s lifestyle SUV segment is moving towards electrification.
JSW Motors is also working on a portfolio of electrified SUVs. A Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid is being seen as a potential first product, while the Chery iCAR V23 electric SUV has also been spotted testing in India.
Both vehicles feature an upright stance, boxy proportions, and rugged SUV styling. Because of this, these products could become alternatives to the Thar Electric for lifestyle SUV buyers in the future.
However, the final competition will depend on pricing, battery capacity, range, performance, and off-road capability.
Mahindra Thar Electric: What To Expect
The latest spy shots clearly indicate that the Mahindra Thar Electric development has progressed beyond the concept stage. There’s a strong possibility that the production-spec SUV will retain the Vision T’s major styling cues, although several changes are expected in the final design.
Battery capacity, electric motor setup, AWD system, range, and charging specifications are currently unknown. Given Mahindra’s INGLO-based EV technology, expectations for strong performance and genuine off-road capability from the Thar Electric are naturally high.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The latest testing is an important development for Mahindra Thar Electric project. The most interesting aspect is that the prototype appears to adapt the Vision T’s futuristic design elements into a production-friendly format without completely abandoning the traditional Thar’s rugged identity.
If Mahindra can combine the concept’s styling and genuine off-road capability with competitive range and pricing, the Thar Electric could become a major product in the Indian electric SUV market.
