McLaren SUV Confirmed, Will Get Hybrid Powertrain
McLaren’s first SUV will be a performance-focused model and will feature a significantly different architecture from the company’s traditional mid-engined supercar formula.
According to McLaren COO Michael Straughan, the future lineup could include front-engined models in four-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive configurations. A new hybrid powertrain has been confirmed specifically for the SUV, but its exact technical setup is currently undisclosed.
This SUV will mark McLaren’s entry into the segment of performance/luxury SUV models such as the Ferrari Purosangue, Lamborghini Urus, and Aston Martin DBX.
Carbon Fiber Body Structure Possible

The company is also exploring interesting options regarding the body structure of the McLaren SUV. McLaren is considering carbon-fiber construction, which connects to the brand’s lightweight composite technology expertise.
However, the carbon-fiber structure has not yet been finalized. The company is also discussing aluminum and other construction options. McLaren Will Build Its Own Engines and Gearboxes

Until now, McLaren’s V6 and V8 engines have been supplied through a partnership with Ricardo. These engines have been used in McLaren’s core road-car lineup since the 2011 relaunch of the 12C.

No Immediate McLaren Electric Car

Company COO Michael Straughan has indicated that McLaren is familiar with the development of EV technology, particularly through the Forseven integration, but the company wants to launch a fully electric model when customer demand in the luxury performance EV segment is sufficiently strong.
This means a hybrid powertrain is the confirmed direction for the upcoming McLaren SUV, not a pure EV setup.
Second UK Factory Planned

McLaren will also establish a second UK vehicle assembly facility alongside its existing Woking production facility.
The exact location of the new factory has not yet been confirmed. According to the company, manufacturing front-engined future models with the existing rear/mid-engined production setup will not be practical, so dedicated additional assembly capacity will be developed.
The Woking facility will also expand. According to McLaren, the existing production center will build around 2,000 cars by 2025. The company’s carbon-fiber manufacturing and research center in South Yorkshire will also be expanded.
McLaren Expansion Will Create Around 4,000 Jobs
The impact of the GBP 500 million investment is not limited to vehicles and factories.
The program is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs in McLaren’s operations, while around 3,000 additional jobs may be added in the supply chain.
The company’s Bicester design and innovation center and Midlands testing and vehicle development facility will also support the future product programme.

Existing McLaren Supercars Will Continue
