Volvo EX90 and ES90 India Launch Today: What’s Special?

The Volvo EX90 is the company’s flagship electric SUV, positioned above the petrol-powered XC90. It is aimed at premium family buyers who want a spacious cabin, luxury features, and an electric powertrain.

On the other hand, the Volvo ES90 is a fully electric luxury sedan. Its India entry is significant as the company is returning to the luxury sedan segment after discontinuing the S90 in June 2025. The ES90 will target buyers who want a fully electric driving experience with the proportions of a traditional luxury sedan.

Both models are based on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and share the 800-volt electrical architecture in global specifications. However, final confirmation of which battery packs and powertrain configurations will be offered in India will be required at launch.

The expected ex-showroom price of the Volvo EX90 could be between Rs. 1.40 crore and Rs. 1.50 crore. These are pre-launch estimates, not official prices.

The EX90 is available in various battery and motor configurations globally. A 106 kWh battery pack and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration are expected for India. Global specifications of this setup produce 456 hp and 670 Nm of torque.

According to the global specification, the EX90 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h. Its claimed WLTP range is up to 625 km. Note that the WLTP range is a global test-cycle figure; actual driving range may vary depending on road conditions, temperature, speed, and driving style.

Features such as a six-seat layout, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, a 9-inch driver display, four-zone automatic climate control, and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system are available on the global model of the EX90. Which of these features will be standard on the India-spec model will be confirmed from the official equipment list.

The expected ex-showroom price of the Volvo ES90 is Rs. It could be around Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 1.20 crore. This is also a pre-launch estimate; the final price will be confirmed only through a company announcement.

The global lineup of the ES90 offers 92kWh single-motor rear-wheel-drive and 106kWh dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations. As per the available global specifications, the 92kWh version produces 333hp and 480Nm, while the 106kWh Twin Motor version produces 456hp and 670Nm. The Twin Motor Performance configuration is available in the global market with outputs up to 680hp and 870Nm.

In terms of range, global WLTP figures vary depending on the battery and powertrain. The 92kWh ES90 has a claimed range of up to 664km, while the 106kWh version has a figure of up to 696km. These figures are not the confirmed range of the India-spec model.

The ES90’s aerodynamic design is a major highlight. Its sedan body and low drag coefficient should help with highway efficiency, although real-world efficiency will depend on driving conditions.

Both cars feature a minimalist dashboard layout and a large portrait-style infotainment screen. Global models feature a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, a 9-inch driver display, and a 13.2-inch head-up display.

The infotainment system uses a Google-based interface, while the cabin design limits physical buttons. Volvo’s focus is on modernizing the driving experience through connected features and digital controls.

Safety is also a key focus for both models. The global EX90 is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, multiple airbags, and driver-support technologies. However, ADAS functions, safety equipment, and feature availability in India should be verified in the final India-specific brochure.

Volvo EX90 and ES90 India Launch: Rivals

The Volvo EX90 could compete with models like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and BMW iX in the premium electric SUV segment. Buyers in this segment prioritize cabin comfort, safety technology, charging convenience, and after-sales support in addition to range.

The Volvo ES90 will compete with premium electric sedans, where the BMW i5 and higher-priced luxury EV options could be relevant alternatives. Final positioning will largely depend on India pricing, available variants, and equipment.

What This Means for Indian Luxury EV Buyers

The Volvo EX90 and ES90’s entry into the premium EV market in India will offer buyers a choice of two different body styles. The EX90 could be relevant for families seeking the space and practicality of a luxury SUV, while the ES90 could appeal to buyers who prefer a premium sedan.

But simply looking at claimed range and acceleration isn’t enough before purchasing a luxury EV. Buyers should also consider a home charging setup, long-distance charging network, warranty, service coverage, and battery-related ownership costs.

The actual value of both models in India will become clearer when Volvo announces official prices, variants, India-specific range, and standard features.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The Volvo EX90 and ES90 India Launch marks an important step for the company in the Indian luxury EV market. The EX90 will target premium family buyers as a flagship electric SUV, while the ES90 will bring Volvo back into the all-electric luxury sedan segment.

Global specifications give both cars a strong technology package, but the final buying decision in India will depend on official pricing, equipment, and real-world ownership support. It’s best to check India-spec details separately from global figures after launch.
