With the US-market XC60 T8 offering up to 78 miles and the XC90 T8 up to 73 miles of electric driving. According to Volvo, these are the longest electric range figures for any plug-in hybrid in the US.
These upgrades target buyers who want to cover more distance on electric power in daily driving, but also want to have a petrol engine backup for long journeys. Volvo is positioning these long-range hybrids as a practical bridge between full EVs and conventional powertrains.

Note: Volvo’s global/European WLTP figures differ. In Europe, the XC60 claims up to 124 miles and the XC90 up to 99 miles. These differences are due to testing cycles and market specifications.
Volvo XC60 PHEV Gets a Major Electric Range Boost
The biggest change to the 2028 Volvo XC60 T8 is its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The SUV has been given a significantly larger battery pack, more than doubling its electric-only range compared to the previous version.
According to US EPA-cycle figures, the XC60 T8 can travel up to 78 miles on electric power. Volvo says this range could be quite meaningful for typical daily driving, especially for owners who can charge the vehicle regularly at home.
The new XC60 T8 has a 37.9 kWh usable battery, while the total battery capacity is reported at 41.2 kWh. The combined output of the powertrain is 455 hp.
455 HP Powertrain With AWD
Even in terms of performance, the XC60 T8 PHEV is not an ordinary hybrid.
The updated powertrain combines a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with electric motors and delivers a total of 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. Power reaches all four wheels, while the XC60 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in around 4.5 seconds.
This means Volvo hasn’t significantly compromised performance while increasing electric range.
XC90 PHEV Also Gets 73-Mile Electric Range
The three-row Volvo XC90 T8 also inherits the same long-range plug-in hybrid philosophy.
The XC90 T8 in US-market specification offers up to 73 miles of electric range. This is more than double the improvement compared to the current-generation PHEV.
The XC90’s larger size and higher weight naturally make the electric range slightly lower than the XC60, but the 73-mile figure is still significant for the US PHEV market.
The WLTP figure for the XC90 in Europe is up to 99 miles.
37.9 kWh Battery Is the Big Story
The main reason for the range improvement is the larger battery pack.
The previous XC60 T8 had a comparatively smaller battery, but in the 2028 model, Volvo has significantly increased the battery capacity. The new pack has 41.2 kWh gross capacity and 37.9 kWh usable capacity, helping the XC60 reach its 78-mile US electric range.
The battery is integrated into the vehicle floor, which also helps with packaging and efficiency. Volvo is aligning this technology with its broader electrification strategy.
XC60 Gets a Fresh Exterior Design
In addition to the powertrain, the 2028 XC60 also receives design updates.
The front section gets a redesigned grille, bumper, bonnet, and front wings, along with new wheels. Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have also been updated.
Changes have also been made to the rear section’s bumper, tailgate, and lighting elements.
The overall design retains the familiar XC60 silhouette, but new details visually differentiate it from the current model.
Interior Gets 11.2-Inch Screen and Google Gemini
Several technology updates have also been received in the cabin.
The 2028 XC60 has a new dashboard and door-panel design along with upgraded materials and new leather options available. The center features an 11.2-inch touchscreen, which runs Volvo’s latest infotainment interface.
One of the biggest technology additions is Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant. It allows drivers to interact with the infotainment system using more natural voice commands for tasks such as navigation and messaging.
The XC90 also receives a Google Gemini-enabled infotainment system.
New Safety Features Added
Volvo has also upgraded the active safety package of the XC60.
New sensor hardware and upgraded cameras help the SUV better understand its surroundings. The system can support functions such as automatic emergency steering and automatic emergency braking when a potential collision is detected.
A cyclist alert feature is also available, which can alert the occupants about an approaching cyclist while opening the door when the vehicle is stopped.
Additionally, the XC60 gets features such as Lane Change Assist and an optional 360-degree camera with 3D view.

Volvo XC90 Remains a Three-Row Luxury SUV
The XC90 did not receive a comprehensive exterior redesign like the XC60, mainly because the larger SUV recently received its own design and technology updates.
However, the XC90 benefits from the same long-range PHEV philosophy and upgraded infotainment system. Volvo continues to position the XC90 as a premium seven-seat SUV focused on comfort, safety and long-distance usability.
When Will the 2028 Volvo XC60 and XC90 Arrive?
The new long-range PHEV models are expected to enter production towards the end of 2026, with customer deliveries beginning in early 2027 for the relevant markets.
Volvo has not yet announced final pricing for these new variants. Therefore, the previously suggested $65,000 XC60 and $80,000 XC90 figures should be treated as estimates rather than confirmed prices.
Long-Range PHEV vs Full EV: Volvo’s Strategy
Volvo’s move is interesting because the company is continuing to expand its fully electric lineup while simultaneously giving its plug-in hybrids much greater electric range.
With a 70-plus-mile US electric range, the 2028 Volvo XC60 and XC90 can potentially cover a large portion of everyday driving without using their petrol engines, provided owners regularly charge them.
At the same time, the combustion engine remains available for longer road trips where charging infrastructure or charging time could otherwise become a concern.
This gives buyers a middle ground between a conventional hybrid and a full battery-electric SUV.
India Launch: Will These Long-Range PHEVs Come Here?
As of now, Volvo has not announced an India launch for these long-range 2028 Volvo XC60 and XC90 PHEV variants.
So Indian buyers should not assume that the US or European range figures will directly translate to the India-spec models. Volvo would need to confirm local availability, specifications and pricing before those details can be reported as final.
For now, the key story is the technology direction: Volvo is pushing plug-in hybrids into a territory where their electric-only range becomes much more useful for everyday driving.
