Suzuki ADAS Plan: Affordable Maruti Cars Could Get Standard Safety Features

Suzuki ADAS technology is being prepared for standard fitment in future India-spec cars. Suzuki is working to standardize core ADAS features in its upcoming vehicles, and this strategy will also include affordable models.

The company is developing a lower-cost ADAS system tailored to India’s traffic and road conditions, so that advanced safety technology is not limited to expensive or premium cars.

According to Suzuki, the proposed system focuses on standardizing accident-prevention functions like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Departure Prevention. However, the company has not yet disclosed which Maruti Suzuki cars will feature this technology first or when its production rollout will begin.

Preparing to Bring ADAS to Affordable Cars

Suzuki states that including expensive ADAS technology in only a few premium vehicles limits its widespread impact on road safety. In line with this vision, the company plans to bring core driver-assistance technology to more affordable vehicles in a large mass-market country like India.

This strategy could be particularly important for Maruti Suzuki, as its largest sales volume in India comes from affordable and mass-market cars. Suzuki’s goal is to develop a “just-right ADAS” package that is suitable for Indian traffic conditions and doesn’t significantly increase vehicle prices.

Which ADAS features will be standard?

Suzuki has currently focused on core safety functions. The most important of these are Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Prevention.

The AEB system can detect the risk of a collision with a vehicle or obstacle in front and provide braking assistance if needed. The lane-departure prevention system can help provide warnings or steering assistance to the driver if the vehicle inadvertently leaves the lane.

On the other hand, adaptive cruise control and some comfort-oriented driver-assistance functions may be offered in separate configurations rather than standard. Suzuki’s current planning reflects a distinction between safety-critical functions and convenience functions.

Removing radar will reduce ADAS costs

The most interesting part is proposed low-cost Suzuki ADAS architecture is its hardware approach. The company is working to reduce system costs by using high-resolution cameras and AI chips.

Furthermore, the proposed setup involves removing the front radar sensor and placing greater reliance on camera-based processing. Driver monitoring and occupant monitoring functions are also planned to be integrated into the ADAS architecture.

Suzuki claims its objective is to significantly reduce costs while maintaining the same or improved safety performance. However, this is still a development target, and the company has not released performance results for the production version.

Suzuki’s SDV Strategy Also Important

This Suzuki ADAS plan is part of Suzuki’s broader SDV strategy. The company is working to develop electronic systems that can integrate different functions more efficiently.

Suzuki is working towards integrating communication, power distribution, and body-control functions through a central zone ECU in its next-generation architecture.

According to the company, this controller aims to reduce costs by approximately 30 percent and weight by approximately 15 percent compared to conventional systems. These figures refer to the controller, not the entire vehicle.

New Turbo-Petrol Engines Also in the Works

Suzuki’s technology roadmap isn’t limited to ADAS. The company is also working on new-generation internal-combustion technology, including new turbo-petrol engines.

Recent reports have revealed information about Suzuki’s new 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo-petrol and 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo-petrol development program. However, their exact India production applications, launch timeline, and which Maruti Suzuki models they will be used in are still pending official confirmation.

Therefore, the reported power and torque figures for these engines are best viewed as development-stage information for now.

Hybrid and Electrification Roadmap

Suzuki is also working on multiple powertrain technologies in the coming years. These include options like a 48V hybrid system for affordable cars, series-hybrid technology, and range-extender electric vehicle solutions.

In addition, development is also underway on higher-output plug-in hybrid technology. This means that Suzuki could use a combination of ICE, hybrid, range-extender, and EV technologies in India in the coming years, rather than relying solely on conventional petrol cars.

Will all Maruti Suzuki cars get ADAS?

It’s too early to say outright that “ADAS will be standard in every Maruti Suzuki car.”

Suzuki has stated plans to make core ADAS functions standard across its future vehicle range, including affordable models, but the company has not yet announced specific Maruti Suzuki models, exact variants, or a rollout timeline.

Therefore, it is not yet confirmed when this system will arrive on the Baleno, Swift, Fronx, WagonR, Alto, or any other specific Maruti car.

Suzuki ADAS strategy is a significant development for India’s mass-market car segment. If the company can effectively reduce the cost of the system through camera- and AI-based architecture, advanced accident-prevention features could reach more affordable Maruti Suzuki cars in the future.

However, this should be seen as Suzuki’s future technology strategy rather than a confirmed feature rollout. The picture will only become clearer once information on specific models, a launch timeline, and production-spec Suzuki ADAS performance is released.
