The Tesla Cybercab has seen an interesting development just days after launching a limited public robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
After relatively low fares during initial rides, as weekend demand increased, the reported pricing for some Cybercab trips has exceeded that of Uber and Tesla’s Model Y Robotaxi.

Tesla Cybercab Rides Become More Expensive Than Uber
According to recent rider-share comparisons, Cybercab’s quoted fare on a 1.3-mile (roughly 2 km) route in Austin was $15.24.
Tesla’s Model Y Robotaxi fare for the same route was reported at around $12.04. Meanwhile, the Uber app showed Wait & Save for the same trip at $6.41, UberX at $7.95, UberXL at $11.99, and Premier at $12.97.

Cybercab Wait Times Are Also Much Higher

Cybercab Is Also Facing NHTSA Scrutiny
A separate regulatory issue has also arisen with Cybercab’s Austin deployment.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an Audit Query on September 4, 2026, examining Tesla’s self-certification that Cybercab complies with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The investigation is particularly significant because Cybercab lacks traditional human controls. NHTSA said it will examine the technical data and processes Tesla relied upon to certify the vehicle, including whether certain existing safety standards were considered inapplicable to an automated vehicle without conventional controls.
Reuters reported that the federal audit covers about 1,000 Cybercab vehicles, while Texas records showed 45 Cybercabs registered in the state as of September 4.
The investigation does not mean Cybercab has been declared unsafe or that its Austin service has been ordered to stop. It is an audit of Tesla’s certification process and compliance basis.
