Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Mileage: 29 kmpl Certified

The biggest highlight of the new Renault Duster Strong Hybrid is its ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 29 kmpl. This figure makes the SUV an interesting contender in the strong-hybrid segment, especially for customers looking for a fuel-efficient petrol SUV for daily city driving and regular highway journeys.
But buyers should understand one thing: 29 kmpl is a certified test figure, not a guarantee of real-world mileage. Actual fuel efficiency can vary depending on traffic conditions, driving style, road conditions, and the weight of passengers and luggage.
Renault’s focus here is not just on mileage, but also on striking a balance between performance and efficiency through the combination of petrol engine and electric motors.
1.8-Liter Petrol Engine, Two Electric Motors
The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 combines a 1.8-liter petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery pack. This powertrain has a combined system output of 160 PS. Renault will introduce it with its E-Tech strong-hybrid technology, an important powertrain addition for the brand in India.

In a hybrid system, the petrol engine and electric motors operate according to driving conditions. The SUV can run on electric power under suitable conditions, while the petrol engine also contributes to propulsion when additional power is needed. The driver does not need to manually select the power source repeatedly; the system automatically manages operation.
This arrangement can have practical benefits in city traffic, where frequent braking, slowing down, and acceleration occur. However, the actual benefit will depend on driving conditions.
Self-Charging Hybrid, Not Plug-In Like an EV
The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid does not require an external charging point. Its 1.4 kWh battery is recharged by energy recovered during braking and deceleration. The vehicle’s hybrid system manages the battery during driving, allowing the petrol engine and electric motors to operate efficiently.
This is a key difference between a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. In a plug-in hybrid, the battery can be charged from an external power source, while the Duster E-Tech 160’s system operates through onboard energy recovery and the petrol engine.

According to Renault, this powertrain has the capability to drive in electric mode up to 80% of the time during city driving, under suitable conditions. This does not mean that the SUV will cover 80% of the distance on electric power in every trip; actual operation will depend on traffic, speed, and battery charge.

Could the Renault Duster Hybrid be an alternative to a diesel SUV?
Renault is positioning this strong-hybrid powertrain for customers who want the fuel-efficiency benefits of a diesel SUV in an alternative petrol-electric setup. The 29 kmpl certified mileage and 160 PS system output make this approach interesting.
For diesel SUV buyers, simply comparing mileage won’t be enough. The purchase decision should also consider the initial price, annual running, maintenance, highway usage, and ownership costs. The hybrid’s advantage may stand out in city driving, while for regular long-distance highway users, the overall cost comparison will be more important.
The final value proposition of the Renault Duster Strong Hybrid will become clear when Renault announces variant-wise prices, equipment, and warranty details.
Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Booking & Launch Date

Renault India opened bookings on October 9, 2026. Customers can reserve the SUV by paying Rs. 21,000. Bookings can be made through the official Renault India website or authorized dealerships.
The SUV’s official India debut and full reveal will take place on October 17, 2026. Pricing, variants, and equipment details are expected at that time. Buyers should confirm cancellation, refund, and delivery-related terms with the dealership before booking.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160’s ARAI-certified mileage of 29 kmpl could make it an important new option in the Indian mid-size SUV market. The combination of a 1.8-litre petrol engine, two electric motors, a 1.4 kWh battery, and a combined output of 160 PS could appeal to buyers who want the benefits of hybrid technology without external charging.
The biggest unanswered question at the moment is its pricing. If Renault launches the hybrid variant with competitive pricing and useful features, it could become an attractive alternative for fuel-efficient SUV buyers. It would be better to wait for the price announcement on 17 October for the final verdict.
