Renault E-Space Concept Revives MPV Design With a 6-Seater Electric Layout

Renault has showcased its new E-Space Concept at the Paris Motor Show 2026, which presents a new take on the brand’s iconic Espace nameplate. Once known as Europe’s first MPV, the Espace was transformed into an SUV-style model in 2023. Now, the new concept indicates that Renault may consider bringing back the name with an MPV body style in the future.

The Renault E-Space Concept is being seen as an alternative to SUVs and traditional saloons. Its focus is not just on design or performance, but on family use, cabin space, comfort and everyday practicality. Renault’s longstanding ‘voitures à vivre’ philosophy also reflects this thinking, where vehicles are designed around people’s daily lives and travel experiences.

Introduced in 1984, the original Espace played a key role in popularizing the MPV segment in the European market. For its first four generations, it sported an MPV design, but in the latest generation, its character has become more SUV-like. The new Renault E-Space Concept re-explores this old identity with a modern electric vehicle design.

Exterior Design of the Renault E-Space Concept

Renault E-Space Concept side profile showcasing its six-seater MPV design, large glasshouse and 24-inch alloy wheels

Modern Styling with a Flaunting of the Old Espace

The exterior of the Renault E-Space Concept has been kept quite clean and minimalist. The front profile features a closed-off grille with U-shaped LED lighting elements. The illuminated Renault logo in the middle gives its front design a futuristic look. Its design focuses on smooth surfaces and flowing lines instead of being boxy like a traditional MPV.

The most interesting design element of this concept is its steeply raked windscreen, which appears to extend forward towards the bonnet. This styling is reminiscent of the original Espace and also draws inspiration from the design of French high-speed TGV trains.

The side profile features a large glass area and 24-inch alloy wheels. According to Renault, the glasshouse has been designed in such a way that more natural light enters the cabin. The concept measures 4.70 meters in length, 2.02 meters in width, and 1.67 meters in height. The company says its overall proportions are inspired by the dimensions and design approach of the original Espace, while shorter overhangs give it a contemporary look.

The rear section features a roof spoiler, the design of which recalls the roof bars of previous Espace generations. U-shaped lighting elements are also used here, which, combined with the gloss-black panel, visually enlarge the rear windscreen.

Interior of the Renault E-Space Concept

Renault E-Space Concept interior featuring a panoramic dashboard display, yoke-style steering wheel and futuristic infotainment system

Six seats in three rows and a family-focused cabin

The cabin of the Renault E-Space Concept prioritizes space and passenger comfort. It has a total of six seats in three rows, making it different from conventional five-seater SUVs. Renault has combined practical features with bright colors in the interior, drawing inspiration from the brand’s 1970s-era design identity.

The dashboard’s most prominent feature is the ‘OpenR Panorama’ display, which covers almost the entire dashboard width. Renault has indicated that a similar display could be offered in future-generation Rafale and Scenic models. This panoramic display is not touch-operated; a separate infotainment touchscreen is also provided on the dashboard for music, navigation, and other functions.

The driver faces a yoke-style steering wheel, which has a different design from the traditional circular steering wheel. The concept also features steer-by-wire technology. In this setup, steering inputs are transmitted through an electronic system, which could reduce the need for a conventional mechanical steering connection and provide additional space in the driver’s footwell.

To increase the cabin’s practicality, folding tables are provided on the front-row seatbacks, which can be used by second-row passengers. The second-row seats can also be folded down to create a table-like surface for third-row passengers. These features indicate that Renault is developing this concept not just as a futuristic design study, but with family travel and flexible cabin use in mind.

Renault E-Space Concept Battery and Range Details

Renault has not yet revealed the E-Space Concept’s powertrain, battery capacity, or official driving range. Therefore, no confirmed figures are currently available regarding its performance and charging capabilities.

However, Renault is developing a platform called RGEV Medium 2.0 for future electric vehicles. According to the company, this platform will support an 800-volt electrical architecture and will be suitable for saloons, SUVs, and MPV body styles.

If the E-Space Concept reaches production in the future, this platform could be used. A claimed WLTP range of up to 750 km has also been targeted for this architecture in future vehicles. However, this figure is not the confirmed range of the E-Space Concept; Renault has not yet announced an official range for this model.

Will the Renault E-Space Concept become an MPV again?

The biggest strength of the Renault E-Space Concept is its design and body style. While many manufacturers are focusing on SUVs, Renault is exploring a vehicle concept that combines family-friendly space, flexible seating, and electric mobility.

Renault has already worked towards reintroducing iconic names like the Twingo, Renault 4 and Renault 5 as modern electric vehicles. The E-Space Concept could be another example of this strategy. However, the company has not yet confirmed the concept’s production version, launch timeline or market availability.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The Renault E-Space Concept shows that there could be a place for MPVs in the future of electric mobility. Three-row seating, a flexible cabin and a large glasshouse make it an interesting family-focused EV.

Now the biggest question is whether Renault will turn this concept into a production model or just keep it as a future design direction.
