Toyota India is preparing to significantly expand its SUV portfolio in the coming years. The company’s future product strategy includes several new models, but two global SUVs are garnering the most attention—the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Toyota Corolla Cross.
Both SUVs are reportedly planned to be brought to India with local production. This could help Toyota keep their prices competitive.

The Land Cruiser FJ could be positioned below the Fortuner, while the Corolla Cross could be positioned as a C-segment SUV, competing against models like the Hyundai Tucson.
Toyota’s upcoming lineup is reported to include the next-generation Fortuner, the 7-seat Hyryder, the updated Glanza, and an all-new electric MPV alongside the Hyryder.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ India Launch
The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will be one of the most interesting SUVs in this upcoming lineup. It is expected to launch in India around 2028.
The new FJ will be positioned below the Fortuner in Toyota’s SUV portfolio. However, its positioning won’t be that of a traditional compact SUV. Its focus will be more rugged and off-road-oriented.
In India, it could serve as a premium alternative to SUVs like the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N.
The Land Cruiser FJ is built on the IMV ladder-frame platform, which is the same architecture that underpins Toyota models like the Fortuner and Innova Crysta. The ladder-frame construction provides the FJ with a strong foundation for rough roads and off-road conditions.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Engine and 4WD

In global markets, the Land Cruiser FJ is offered with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produces 166 hp and 245 Nm.
The engine is paired to a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox with a sequential shift function.
For off-road capability, the SUV features a part-time 4WD system and a rear differential lock.
However, it is not yet confirmed whether the India-spec Land Cruiser FJ will feature this powertrain. Reports suggest that Toyota may also consider a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine with mild-hybrid technology for the Indian market.
Furthermore, strong-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are also being considered, but there is currently no official confirmation regarding the arrival of these powertrains in India.
Where will the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ be manufactured?
Local manufacturing of the Land Cruiser FJ in India could be part of Toyota’s Maharashtra-based production strategy.
It is reported that it could be one of the first models to roll out of Toyota’s upcoming Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant.
Local production could help Toyota reduce import costs and position the SUV at a more competitive price.
Toyota Corolla Cross India Launch
The Corolla Cross is Toyota’s second major SUV planned after the Land Cruiser FJ.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is expected to be introduced in India around 2029. It is reported to be produced at the company’s Bidkin Industrial Area (BIA) facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
The Corolla Cross is positioned as a C-segment SUV in Toyota’s global portfolio. In India, it is expected to compete with the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, and other premium SUVs in the same price bracket, although final positioning will become clearer closer to launch.

Corolla Cross Platform
The global Corolla Cross is built on the TNGA-C platform. This platform underpins several global Toyota models, as well as the Innova Hycross.
The India-spec version is also expected to use this architecture.
In terms of size and positioning, the Corolla Cross could create a new space between the Hyryder and larger SUVs in Toyota’s India SUV portfolio.
Corolla Cross Engine Options

In international markets, the Corolla Cross is sold with different powertrain options.
One option is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 171 PS and 205 Nm. This engine is paired with a CVT automatic gearbox and a front-wheel-drive setup.
A more interesting option is a 2.0-liter strong-hybrid powertrain.
In this hybrid setup, the petrol engine and electric motor combine to produce a combined power of approximately 196 bhp. It features an e-CVT transmission, and Electronic On-Demand AWD is also available in some markets.
Which engine or hybrid setup will be chosen for the Corolla Cross in India is still pending official confirmation. However, given Toyota’s strong-hybrid technology, an electrified version could be very important for India.
Toyota’s India SUV Strategy Strengthens
The entry of these two SUVs could significantly diversify Toyota’s India portfolio.
While the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will slot below the Fortuner as a rugged ladder-frame SUV, the Corolla Cross could target buyers as a more urban-focused premium SUV.
Models like the next-generation Fortuner, 7-seat Hyryder, updated Hyryder, and Glanza will refresh Toyota’s existing portfolio. The company’s future lineup is also expected to include an electric MPV.

When will these Toyota SUVs arrive in India?
Currently, the India launch timelines for both the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Corolla Cross are expected, not officially confirmed launch dates.
A timeframe of 2028 for the Land Cruiser FJ and 2029 for the Corolla Cross has been revealed. If Toyota introduces these two SUVs with local production, the company’s SUV portfolio in India could be significantly strengthened.
The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ could particularly appeal to buyers who want a more rugged SUV, different from the Fortuner, while the Corolla Cross could serve as a more premium and comfortable family SUV.
