Mahindra gave the Thar relatively subtle updates in 2025, but the upcoming model is expected to get a proper facelift treatment. The biggest change could be seen in the front-end, where the design of the standard Thar appears to be heavily influenced by the Thar Roxx, i.e. the 5-door Thar.

The Thar Facelift’s front design will be the biggest highlight

Judging by the latest test mule, it appears Mahindra will make noticeable changes to the front fascia. The SUV has been spotted with a new grille, which could be inspired by, or potentially closely related to, the Thar Roxx’s design.
Circular projector LED headlights and C-shaped LED DRLs are also visible. This lighting setup matches the Thar Roxx’s overall design theme and could give the facelifted Thar a more premium appearance than the current model.
Substantial revisions are also expected in the front bumper. Judging by the design of the test mule, the bumper could follow a similar treatment to the Thar Roxx, while the LED fog lamps are also likely to receive cornering functions.
No Major Changes to the Side Profile

Despite the facelift, the Thar’s familiar boxy silhouette is likely to be largely carried forward. The side profile is likely to retain the current-generation SUV’s basic design language, as major visual changes appear to be primarily focused on the front section.
However, the wheel design may be updated. Spy shots reveal a different alloy wheel pattern. Wheel size is likely to be around 18 inches, similar to the current Thar’s setup.
Rear Design to Remain Mostly Familiar
Relatively limited changes are expected in the rear section compared to the front. Signature elements like the tailgate-mounted spare wheel and split tailgate layout are likely to continue.
The LED tail lamps could receive minor design revisions, and the rear bumper could also receive subtle updates. The overall rear-end DNA is expected to remain connected to the current Thar.
The 2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift Interiors Could See Major Upgrades
Along with the exterior, Mahindra could significantly upgrade the cabin feature list. Sources suggest the facelifted Thar could include features like a TFT instrument cluster and automatic climate control.
In addition, an auto-dimming IRVM and ventilated front seats could also be expected features in higher-spec variants. Perforated leatherette upholstery could give the cabin a more premium feel compared to the current model.
Safety: A 360-degree camera system is also likely to be added to the front. Level-2 ADAS may be available as an option on the higher-spec LX trim, although the final availability of this feature will be confirmed at launch.
Rear disc brakes and front/side parking sensors are also potential additions to the upcoming Thar facelift.

Expect to get more features from the Thar Roxx

If Mahindra positions the Thar facelift closely to the Thar Roxx, some premium equipment is likely to be transferred into the cabin as well.
Features like a Harman Kardon audio system and soft-touch interior materials could help make the current Thar more upmarket. However, the availability of these features has not yet been officially confirmed.
No major changes expected in engine options
No major mechanical overhauls are expected in the powertrain department with the 2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift. The SUV is likely to continue the current model’s three-engine lineup.
Expected options include:
| Engine | Expected Gearbox | Expected Drivetrain |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-litre Turbo Diesel | Manual | RWD |
| 2.0-litre Turbo Petrol | Manual/Automatic | 4WD option |
| 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel | Manual/Automatic | 4WD option |
The 1.5-liter diesel engine is expected to continue with a manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive configuration. The larger 2.0-liter petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines could be available with an automatic transmission and 4WD capability.
When will the 2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift launch?
Latest spy shots indicate that the 2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift has reached an advanced stage of testing. The test mule appears close to production-spec, so a long wait for launch is not expected.
Official confirmation of the launch date and final feature list is awaited from Mahindra. Pricing is also likely to be revealed closer to launch.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The 2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift biggest upgrade won’t just be cosmetic. Thar Roxx-inspired front styling, potentially better cabin equipment, and additional safety features could make this lifestyle SUV noticeably more premium than the current model.
If Mahindra successfully blends the Thar Roxx’s successful design language with the rugged character of the 3-door Thar, the facelifted Thar could attract both its existing fan base and premium lifestyle SUV buyers.
Note: The above-mentioned ADAS, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio, soft-touch materials, and other upcoming features should be considered expected before launch, as they have not been officially confirmed in the source material.
