Tata Punch Becomes India’s No.1 Selling Car

In August 2026, the Tata Punch recorded combined sales of 21,320 units. This figure includes sales of the ICE Punch and the Punch EV. In July 2026 as well, the Punch family sold 21,313 units, meaning month-on-month performance remained almost flat.
The picture is quite impressive in year-on-year comparison. In August 2025, the Punch family sold 10,704 units, representing 99% growth compared to 21,320 units in August 2026.
With this performance, the Punch beat the Maruti Suzuki WagonR by 1,140 units. WagonR’s August sales stood at 20,180 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Swift remained in third place with 19,832 units.
A Rs 5.74 Lakh Starting Price Also Creates a Strong Package
The 2026 Tata Punch facelift was launched in January at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 5.74 lakh. However, this was an introductory price, so considering it the current starting price in the context of August 2026 would not be technically correct.
The Punch’s strong positioning isn’t just due to price. Tata Motors significantly expanded the compact SUV’s powertrain options, technology, and safety equipment with the facelift.
120 PS Turbo Petrol Engine

The biggest mechanical update in the 2026 Punch facelift is the 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine. This engine produces 120 PS and 170 Nm and is available with a 6-speed manual transmission.
A regular 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine is also available, developing 88 PS and 115 Nm. The petrol powertrain comes with a 5-speed manual and AMT options.

AMT also available with CNG
A major USP of the Punch is its CNG-AMT combination. After the 2026 update, the Tata Punch will offer an AMT option with the CNG powertrain, which is a significant differentiator in this segment. The CNG setup produces 73.5 PS and 103 Nm.
This means buyers have multiple powertrain options, such as a petrol manual, petrol AMT, turbo-petrol manual, and CNG manual/AMT, all within a single model.
5-Star Bharat NCAP Safety Rating
Safety is also an important part of the Punch’s popularity. The Tata Punch has received a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, while higher safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX provisions.
Tata Motors has positioned the Punch as a safety-focused compact SUV, which could be a major consideration for family buyers.
193mm Ground Clearance
The Punch’s 193mm ground clearance is also a useful specification for Indian road conditions. Its compact dimensions, combined with its relatively high ground clearance, provide an SUV-like stance and practicality on rough roads.
This combination—compact footprint, SUV-style design, and high ground clearance—makes the Punch a practical option for urban buyers.
10.25-Inch Screen, 360-Degree Camera, and Sunroof

The Punch’s cabin also received significant technology-focused updates with the 2026 facelift. Higher variants include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 360-degree camera.
Top variants also get features like a voice-assisted electric sunroof, a wireless charger, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming IRVM, and connected-car technology.
The Punch EV is also part of this success story
An important point here: August’s 21,320-unit figure combines the Punch ICE and Punch EV. Therefore, this shouldn’t be considered solely the 21,320-unit sales of the petrol/CNG Punch.
With petrol, CNG, and electric powertrain options available in the Punch family, Tata Motors is able to target different types of buyers with a single compact-SUV nameplate.

Why were Punch sales so strong?

The Punch’s sales performance is difficult to explain with just one factor. With the 2026 facelift, Tata Motors added a turbo-petrol engine, CNG-AMT, a bigger touchscreen, a 360-degree camera, and additional convenience features.
Also, the Punch’s compact size, SUV styling, relatively high ground clearance, and established safety reputation make it an attractive package for urban family buyers.
The most interesting part is that the Punch’s ICE and EV versions are available in the same broader family, giving Tata Motors the advantage of targeting petrol, CNG, and electric buyers.
Auto India Daily Verdict
