Ducati Formula 73: A Tribute to the Iconic 750 Super Sport Desmo

The Ducati Formula 73 was developed as a tribute to the 750 Super Sport Desmo—a legendary motorcycle in the brand’s history. The original model, released in 1973, was one of the first road-going Ducatis to feature a desmodromic valve timing system.
It also shares a connection to the 1972 ‘200 Miglia di Imola’ race, where Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari secured victories riding the Ducati 750 Imola Desmo. The Formula 73 embodies this racing legacy and classic Ducati design philosophy, presented through a modern lens.
The motorcycle’s silver and aqua-green color scheme is inspired by the original Super Sport. A vertical gold stripe runs along the fuel tank, reminiscent of an unpainted strip found on the original Imola Desmo—a feature once used to check fuel levels in the absence of a dedicated fuel gauge.
Cafe Racer Styling and Premium Details
The design of the Ducati Formula 73 is rooted in the classic cafe racer aesthetic. It features clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, a short front fairing, and a tapered rear section, all of which lend the motorcycle a retro-racing appearance.
The bike also incorporates billet aluminum components, adding a touch of premium detailing. These include levers, footpegs, and a Rizoma fuel cap. The silver and aqua-green livery, accented with gold detailing, gives the motorcycle a distinct identity that sets it apart from standard production models.
The overall design features a blend of modern hardware and classic Ducati racing cues.
803cc Engine Produces 73hp

The Ducati Formula 73 is powered by an 803cc Desmodue L-twin engine. This engine produces a maximum power of 73hp at 8,250 rpm and a peak torque of 65.2 Nm at 7,000 rpm.
The engine is paired with a Termignoni exhaust system, developed specifically for this model. This setup complements the motorcycle’s performance-oriented character.
Chassis, Suspension, and Braking Hardware
The Ducati Formula 73 is built on a steel trellis frame. For suspension, it features 41mm KYB upside-down forks at the front and a preload-adjustable KYB monoshock at the rear.
The motorcycle has a wet weight (excluding fuel) of 183 kg. It rides on 17-inch spoked wheels fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires.
This hardware package is designed to balance cafe racer styling with sporty road performance.

Features and Electronics
Despite its classic styling, the Ducati Formula 73 incorporates a well-integrated suite of modern electronics. Its key features include:
- Cornering ABS
- Traction control
- Quickshifter
- Two riding modes
- 4.3-inch TFT display
- Full-LED lighting
Additionally, heated grips and turn-by-turn navigation are offered as accessories. With these features, the motorcycle combines a classic aesthetic with the convenience of modern-day riding.
Only 873 Units Worldwide

The primary reason for the exclusivity of the Ducati Formula 73 is its limited production run. Only 873 units will be produced globally, and each motorcycle will feature its own unique serial number on the steering plate.
Every unit will come with a certificate of authenticity. Ducati will also provide a special box containing period-accurate photographs from the company’s Style Centre, along with original design sketches.
All units allocated for India have already been booked. This means that interested customers looking to purchase the motorcycle will need to check with an authorised Ducati dealership regarding future availability.

Auto India Daily Verdict
The Ducati Formula 73 is a limited-edition motorcycle that blends brand heritage, café racer styling, and modern performance. Its 803cc L-twin engine, 73hp power output, Termignoni exhaust, and premium components make it a truly distinctive offering.
However, the motorcycle’s greatest appeal lies not just in its performance, but also in its historical significance and limited production run. With only 873 units produced globally—each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity—it holds special appeal for Ducati collectors and brand enthusiasts.
In India, the fact that all allocated units have already been booked—despite an ex-showroom price of Rs 20 lakh—underscores its exclusivity. The Formula 73 is designed for buyers who seek more than just a motorcycle; they want a collectible machine deeply connected to Ducati’s racing history.
