Hyundai Compact EV: Platform and Battery Options

The Hyundai Compact EV, internally codenamed HE1i, will be based on the company’s E-GMP (K) platform. This platform is also used in the Hyundai Inster EV sold in international markets. The India-spec model will be produced at its Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu.
Hyundai plans to offer this electric SUV in two versions: Standard Range and Long Range. The battery capacity, power output, and driving range of both variants have not been officially confirmed yet. Therefore, the figures for the international-spec Inster should not be considered as the final specifications of the India-spec model.
For reference, the overseas Hyundai Inster comes with 42kWh and 49kWh battery packs. According to the company’s claimed WLTP figures, their range is up to 300km and 355km respectively. The Standard Range version produces 97hp power and 147Nm torque, while the Long Range version produces 115hp and 147Nm.
The Hyundai Compact EV coming to India is also reported to have two battery options, but its final range and performance may differ from the international version. A clearer picture of its actual range will emerge only after Indian driving conditions, vehicle specifications, and homologation are determined.
Hyundai Compact EV: Svolt’s Role in Battery Supply, Local Cells Later
Upcoming Hyundai Compact EV will initially use Svolt-supplied battery cells. Locally sourced battery cells also play a role in the company’s long-term planning. Hyundai plans to work towards battery localization in India through an association with Exide.
However, the shift to local cells may happen later due to delays in Exide’s battery production timeline. This means that the battery sourcing strategy may differ for initial production and future batches. The actual impact of local sourcing on costs, supply chain, and vehicle pricing is not yet clear.
Focusing on battery manufacturing and local supply chain in India is important for the EV industry. However, the extent to which localization will benefit Hyundai’s compact EV pricing will remain to be determined until the company’s official announcement.

Features: Level 2 ADAS and Next-Generation Infotainment

Hyundai has confirmed that the upcoming Hyundai Compact EV will feature Level 2 ADAS and a next-generation infotainment system. The infotainment setup could include the brand’s Pleos Connect system, which has been seen in some newer Hyundai models. However, the exact screen sizes and connected features of the India-spec model are not yet confirmed.
The international Hyundai Inster gets dual 10.25-inch displays, which include a digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Features like automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera, and blind-spot monitoring are also available on the overseas model.
It’s too early to say whether these features will be available on the India-spec compact EV. Hyundai has only confirmed Level 2 ADAS and next-generation infotainment for now. The final feature list is expected to be revealed variant-wise closer to the launch.
Who will be the Hyundai Compact EV’s rivals?
Upon launch in India, Hyundai Compact EV could compete with models like the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and Kia Syros EV. Driving range, charging convenience, cabin space, safety technology, and ownership cost will be important factors for buyers in this segment.
Simply offering an electric powertrain won’t be enough for Hyundai. The company will need to deliver features, along with pricing and practical range, that address Indian buyers’ daily commuting and occasional highway travel needs. The option of Standard Range and Long Range versions can give buyers a choice based on their budget and usage.
Auto India Daily Verdict
The January 2027 debut of upcoming Hyundai Compact EV is currently a reported timeline, not an official launch date. Key highlights of this model include India-specific development, two expected range options, Level 2 ADAS, and a next-generation infotainment system. Manufacturing in Sriperumbudur also highlights this EV’s importance for the Indian market.
Currently, the biggest unanswered questions concern battery capacity, India-specific driving range, charging capabilities, and pricing. Until Hyundai confirms these details, it would be inaccurate to directly apply international Inster specifications to the India model. If Hyundai offers practical range along with competitive pricing, this compact electric SUV could become an important new option in the Indian EV market.
