Volkswagen has unveiled the new Tukan pickup truck in Brazil. Available in single-cab and double-cab versions, the Tukan is the first Volkswagen pickup to use the MQB platform and is scheduled to enter the Brazilian market in the first half of 2027.

The Volkswagen Tukan marks an important milestone for the German automaker as it becomes the first Volkswagen pickup based on the MQB platform.
Production is planned at Volkswagen’s plant in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, with the truck expected to arrive in Brazil during the first half of 2027.

Volkswagen Tukan Pickup Gets Two Different Versions
Volkswagen will offer the Tukan in two distinct body styles designed for different types of buyers.
The Single-Cab Robust version is focused primarily on commercial users and load-carrying duties. It gets a shorter cabin and a longer cargo bed, making it more suitable for businesses and customers who prioritise practicality.
The Double-Cab Extreme, meanwhile, is positioned as a lifestyle pickup for private buyers. Volkswagen showcased this version in a distinctive Canary Yellow colour.
Despite their different purposes, both versions share the same basic design language.
Bold Design With a High-Riding Stance
The Volkswagen Tukan Pickup gets a tall and upright front-end design with a prominent grille area and higher-mounted LED headlamps.
The pickup also features pronounced wheel arches, a higher waistline and substantial lower-body protective cladding. These elements give it a more rugged appearance while maintaining Volkswagen’s modern design approach.
At the rear, the LED tail-lamps, tailgate and bumper have been designed to form a cohesive visual package.
The Double-Cab version also gets a black connecting element between the rear tail-lamps, while this feature is absent on the Single-Cab model.

First Volkswagen Pickup Based on MQB Platform
One of the biggest highlights of the Tukan is its platform.
The new pickup is the first Volkswagen pickup to use the MQB architecture, although Volkswagen has substantially modified the platform to suit the requirements of a pickup truck.
The changes include a dedicated leaf-spring rear suspension setup, which has been developed with load-carrying ability and durability in mind.
The Volkswagen Tukan Pickup also gets an extended wheelbase compared with the vehicle that forms the basis of the architecture.
Volkswagen says the Tukan has already completed more than two million kilometres of testing, including real-world evaluations with customers.
Practical Cargo Bed for Commercial Users
The Single-Cab version is particularly focused on practicality.
Volkswagen says the cargo bed has been designed to support different types of usage and can accommodate pallets of different sizes. The pickup will also feature an integrated toolbox and a range of accessories for different applications.
This should make the Robust version more suitable for customers who intend to use the Tukan as a working vehicle rather than simply as a lifestyle pickup.
Expected 1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol Engine
Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the final engine and transmission specifications of the Tukan.
However, the pickup is expected to use a mild-hybrid version of Volkswagen’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine.
The company is expected to reveal additional details about the powertrain and other specifications closer to its market launch.
Volkswagen Tukan Pickup Production and Launch
The new Volkswagen Tukan Pickup has been designed, developed and will be manufactured in Brazil.
Production will take place at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais plant in Paraná, with the Brazilian market launch scheduled for the first half of 2027.
Volkswagen has also stated that approximately 76 per cent of the Tukan’s components will be sourced locally, highlighting the model’s strong connection to the Brazilian market.
Volkswagen Tukan: What Makes It Important?
The Tukan gives Volkswagen a new product in the growing compact pickup segment while also introducing the MQB platform to the company’s pickup lineup for the first time.
With two body configurations, a dedicated load-focused suspension setup and a design aimed at both commercial and lifestyle buyers, Volkswagen is targeting two different customer groups with the same basic model.
For now, the Volkswagen Tukan Pickup has been confirmed for Brazil and South America, and Volkswagen has not announced plans to bring the pickup to India.
