BYD Atto 2 Spotted Testing as India-Bound SUV Nears Its Debut

BYD India appears to be preparing to strengthen its SUV lineup. BYD Atto 2 Spotted testing images have surfaced once again, indicating that the company is working rapidly on its next midsize SUV launch.

In the international market, this model is available in both electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. Now the biggest question is with which powertrain the company will introduce this SUV in India.

BYD has established a premium positioning in the Indian EV market over the past few years, and the Atto 2 could take that strategy further.

If this model launches as per the expected timeline, buyers could get another technology-focused option in the midsize SUV segment.

The latest BYD Atto 2 Spotted test mule was in heavy camouflage, but some important styling details are clearly visible. The front profile features slim LED headlamps connected by a gloss black trim, with the BYD logo in the middle.

Black cladding around the wheel arches and a petal-inspired alloy wheel design give the SUV a sporty appearance.

The side profile design has been kept clean, while conventional door handles indicate that the company is also focusing on practicality.

The rear section isn’t fully visible due to camouflage, but it’s expected to feature connected LED taillights and silver-finished bumper inserts, similar to the international model.

The cabin will focus on technology

BYD Atto 2 Spotted shots didn’t provide a full glimpse of the interior, but some features were visible. A free-standing touchscreen infotainment system is featured on the dashboard, while a camera-based ADAS sensor was also seen behind the windscreen.

The test vehicle featured all-black upholstery, although the international model also offers a beige and black dual-tone cabin option.

The expected India-spec model could feature premium features like a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital driver display, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, a 360-degree camera, and a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function.

EV or PHEV, which version will come to India?

Currently, the company has not officially confirmed the India-spec powertrain. In Europe, the BYD Atto 2 is available with two battery pack options. The electric version comes with a 45.1 kWh and a 64.8 kWh battery pack, with the larger one offering a claimed range of up to 430 km on the WLTP cycle.

Both EV variants feature a front-mounted electric motor that generates 201 hp and 310 Nm of peak torque. According to official figures, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.9 seconds.

On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid version, sold as the Atto 2 DM-i, features a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack. Combined system output reaches 212 hp and 300 Nm, while the company claims a total WLTP driving range of up to 1,000 km.

BYD currently sells only electric vehicles in India, but the company recently showcased its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology. This has further fueled speculation about the Atto 2. If BYD launches both EV and PHEV versions in India, it could offer buyers more flexibility based on their driving needs.

If only the electric version is launched, the company’s focus will be on further expanding the premium EV segment.

Will it compete with SUVs?

When the electric version launches, the BYD Atto 2 could compete with models like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV, Mahindra BE 6, and Maruti e Vitara.

If the plug-in hybrid variant also comes to India, it could become a new alternative for buyers of SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Renault Duster and MG Astor.

Auto India Daily Verdict

The BYD Atto 2 spotted testing images not only provide a glimpse of an upcoming SUV, but also strengthen BYD’s India expansion plans.

Premium features, ADAS technology, and the potential for a plug-in hybrid powertrain with EV capabilities make it an interesting product in the midsize SUV segment.

However, the model’s actual positioning will depend on its India pricing, localization strategy, and the company’s powertrain decisions.

If BYD launches the Atto 2 with competitive pricing and retains international-spec features, it could emerge as a serious challenger to established rivals from Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra.
